Bee bomb disposal
US scientists have trained bees to sniff out bombs.
The researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico taught the insects to detect the odour of substances ranging from dynamite to explosives by exposing them to the distinct smells and then rewarding them with sugar water.
They now hope the bees will help in the fight against suicide bombers.
Scientist Tim Haarmann, who was involved with the Stealthy Insect Sensor Project, told Reuters: "When the bees detect the presence of explosives, they simply stick their proboscis (the tube they use to feed on nectar) out.
"We are very excited at the success of our research as it could have far-reaching implications for both defence and homeland security." "It would be great to start saving some lives with this."
