SEINFELD STAR RICHARDS INSISTS HE’S NOT RACIST
LATEST: Former SEINFELD star MICHAEL RICHARDS insists he is not racist despite leaving comedy fans stunned during a Friday night (17NOV06) performance at Los Angeles’ Laugh Factory when he blasted a pair of African-American hecklers with a racist rant.
The funnyman, who played quirky COSMO KRAMER in the beloved sitcom, lost his cool during a stand-up routine at the comedy club when two black audience members challenged him - and his comments were caught on camera.
News website TMZ.com, which obtained the footage, reports the comedy show turned ugly when Richards realised his hecklers were black and he branded them "n**gers".
Speaking via satellite on last night’s (20NOV06) THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Richards said, "For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I’m deeply, deeply sorry.
"I’m not a racist. That’s what’s so insane about this." Richards former SEINFELD co-star JERRY SEINFELD was a scheduled guest on The Late Show and gave his pal support, saying, "He’s someone that I love, and I know how shattered he is about (the incident)."
