LLOYD WEBBER ART SALE HALTED BY JUDGE
A US judge has stopped British composer SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’s art foundation from selling a valuable PABLO PICASSO painting after a German collector claimed he owns the piece.
PORTRAIT OF ANGEL FERNANDEZ DE SOTO was due under the hammer at Christie’s auction house in New York on Wednesday (08NOV06) and was expected to fetch as much as $60 million (£33.3 million).
But bidding has been halted by JULIUS SCHOEPS, who has contested Lloyd Webber’s rights of sale, insisting the work is his heirloom.
Yesterday (06NOV06) US Judge JED RAKOFF temporarily halted the sale until the matter is heard in court in New York later today (07NOV06).
