Pop star MADONNA insists her efforts to adopt 13-month-old DAVID BANDA in Malawi were so difficult logistically and emotionally she almost gave up.
The HUNG UP singer and husband GUY RITCHIE were granted an interim adoption order for the young boy last month (0CT06).
She tells Time magazine about the harrowing process saying, "Every day I thought, ‘OK, forget it. We’ll find a family here to look after him. "I just (kept) thinking, ‘Oh God, I don’t want to get too attached, because what if it doesn’t happen? "It was one f**king thing after the next, everywhere we went. So the idea that people think I got a shortcut or an easy ride is absolutely ludicrous. "I have never worked so hard for anything in my life, and I’ve never been given such a hard time. And my celebrity has worked against me in every way.
"If you’re a famous person who’s trying to make a difference in the world, you’d better be prepared to find yourself in the headquarters of hell."

Tour De France cycling hero LANCE ARMSTRONG struggled through the New York City Marathon yesterday (05NOV06), coming in 856th in a field of more than 35,000 runners.
The former fiance of rocker SHERYL CROW clocked up an impressive time of just under three hours, but confessed afterwards the 26.2 mile course had tested his fitness and stamina levels.
The seven-time Tour De France champ admitted, "That was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done."

TOM CRUISE has won high praise from his WAR OF THE WORLDS co-star TIM ROBBINS, who thinks the new United Artists studio boss is among the most professional and positive people in the business.
While many Hollywood experts criticise the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE star for his Scientology stance and bizarre behaviour on chat shows, Tinseltown activist Robbins has nothing but fond memories of working with the movie star.

LINDSAY LOHAN’s dreams of working with her movie heroine ANNMARGRET are to be realised - they’ll play relatives in a new film based on a long-forgotten TENNESSEE WILLIAMS screenplay.
Lohan will play the unruly daughter of a 1920s Memphis, Tennessee plantation owner who passes her down-and-out boyfriend off as a well-to-do suitor in THE LOSS OF A TEARDROP DIAMOND.
Her lover will be played by CHRIS EVANS, while Ann-Margret will play the snobbish spinster aunt of Lohan’s character.
Another acting great, ELLEN BURSTYN, will play Lohan’s mother in the film, which will also feature GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK star DAVID STRATHAIRN.
The script, which was first published in the collection STOPPED ROCKING & OTHER SCREENPLAYS in 1984, was discovered after Williams’ death and is believed to have been written in the 1950s.
Lohan has often spoken of her fondness for Ann-Margret in interviews and imitated her on satire show SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE in April (06).

Actor-turned-reality TV producer WILMER VALDERRAMA is developing a top secret stageshow for US troops.
The formed THAT 70′S SHOW star will kick off 2007 by visiting troops stationed overseas and he’s planning a fun-filled comedy show to help relieve the tension of warfare and service.
He says, "I’m going to Germany in January to visit the troops and eventually work out a trip to Afghanistan and Iraq as well.
"I’m formulating a show for the troops and I’m excited to go visit our people out there. Most of my fans are out there." Next year is gearing up to be a busy one for Valderrama - he’s slated to portray highway patrol cop FRANCIS ‘PONCH’ PONCHERELLO in the movie adaptation of hit 1980s cop show CHiPs (corr).

Actor WILMER VALDERRAMA is refusing to give up on his Latino zombie movie EL MUERTO, even though the project is still not complete a year after it wrapped.
The former THAT 70′S SHOW star plays a member of the living dead in the movie, who protects his friends and family from the shadows on East Los Angeles.
Valderrama had such fun making the film in 2005 he’s determined to make sure it doesn’t become forgotten - because he feels it has cult status written all over it.
He says, "We did El Muerto independently and a lot of the special effects were taking forever because one company took it over and they did some effects that didn’t really work out.
"But they’re redoing the special effects and it’s a very exciting franchise and I’m excited to take it to the next level.
"My character, DIEGO, is technically a zombie but he acts so cool."

The author who inspired the movie CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN has died in Fresno, California. She was 98.
ERNESTINE GILBRETH CAREY’s memoir about life in a family of 12 children inspired a number of Hollywood films, including 1950’s Cheaper by the Dozen, it’s 2003 remake and last year’s (05) sequel.
Carey wrote Cheaper by the Dozen with her brother FRANK GILBRETH in the 1940s. It became a bestseller in 1948.

LATEST: US comedian BILL MAHER has lashed out at critics who have slammed him for dressing up as Crocodile Hunter STEVE IRWIN for Halloween.
Irwin died in September (06) when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was filming a documentary in Australia.
Pictures of Maher were widely circulated on the Internet and sparked outrage, with critics labeling the outfit inappropriate and insensitive.
Maher hits back saying, "Stop hassling me about my Halloween costume. Yes, you’ve seen it on the Internet.
"I went as the Crocodile Hunter with a bloody stinger in my chest. People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn’t have been.
"You want me to apologise for making a joke? Who do you think I am, (former US Presidential Candidate) JOHN KERRY?"

Former CHEERS star KIRSTIE ALLEY was desperately trapped in a vicious cycle of binge eating and consumed massive amounts of food every day.
The star, who lost 75 pounds (34 kilograms) on the Jenny Craig diet plan, unveiled her newly svelte figure on THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW today (06NOV06) wearing a mauve-coloured bikini.
She says at her worst she would binge uncontrollably eating, "Twenty sugar-free Popsicles. Twelve grape sodas. Chips. Two burritos. A tostada. I was eating six, seven, eight thousand calories a day." The 55-year-old star tells Life magazine, "I had a holiday mentality. I ate with wild abandon." Alley says the motivation to start losing weight began with a simple thought, "I’m old, I’m fat. What am I worth?" The star tells Winfrey that she has more confidence now than she did in her younger years adding, "I was so introverted about my body. "When I looked back on my movies and things (I thought), ‘Wow, you had a really nice body.’ But, at the time, I was (feeling) not good enough." The star insists her life is back on track adding, "I feel happy with the way I look and feel. For me, that’s the greatest thing that’s happened."

Former LIFE GOES ON and ER star KELLIE MARTIN has welcomed her first child with husband KEITH CHRISTIAN.
The couple’s daughter, MARGARET HEATHER CHRISTIAN, was born Sunday (05NOV06) and weighed 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms).
Martin’s representative tells us publication People, "Kellie and Maggie are both doing very well." The couple have been married for seven years.

LATEST: An 18-year-old Russian immigrant has been jailed after threatening to kill singer-turned-actress HILARY DUFF.
Alleged stalker MAKSIM MIAKOVSKY was arrested on Friday (03NOV06) at the Residence Inn hotel in Manhattan Beach, California.
He was later booked on charges of making criminal threats and stalking, according to entertainment news website TMZ.com.
According to sources, a private investigator from Sunset Protective Services contacted Miakovsky at the hotel and he stated his intention of killing Duff on Sunday (05NOV06) at an event she was scheduled to attend. Last month (OCT06), Duff and her boyfriend, GOOD CHARLOTTE singer JOEL MADDEN, requested a restraining order, alleging that Miakovsky "has stated his intention of ‘removing’ his ‘enemies’ (other potential suitors), has stated his intention of purchasing a weapon, and has threatened to kill himself and to engage in dramatic actions to get her attention." Legal papers filed by Duff state that Miakovsky came to the US "for the sole purpose of meeting and becoming romantically involved with Ms Duff".
Miakovsky is currently being held on $200,000 (£111,000) bail at the Manhattan Beach jail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow (07NOV06).

The rapper and entrepreneur started hiding behind dark shades after watching his appearance at a press conference after the 1991 New York basketball stampede, which he organised.
Diddy saw pictures of himself trying to explain what led to the post-game riot that left nine kids dead on the court - and he realised he didn’t want to look so vulnerable ever again.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "What happened at City College is the worst thing that ever happened to me.
"I felt such a form of sorrow and remorse and then I saw a picture of myself going through it. I saw all of myself revealed, in my eyes, and that’s why I wear shades. It’s a protecting thing.
"If anybody looks into my eyes, they see there’s just a f**kin’ child in there. You see my eyes, you know what I’m thinking. If I’m mad, you’re going to be able to tell. If I’m sad, (there’s) no way I can hide it.

Pop star STING was shocked when he met ROBERT DOWNEY JR and discovered the actor regularly served him coffee at a neighbourhood restaurant in New York City before he got his big break.
Downey stars in the critically acclaimed film A GUIDE TO RECOGNISING YOUR SAINTS, which was produced by Sting and his wife TRUDIE STYLER. Sting explains, "I met him a few years ago and he was a famous actor and he said, ‘You don’t remember me do you?’ "And I said, ‘Yes, you’re Robert Downey, and he said, ‘No, I used to be your waiter down in Soho (New York City).’ "I used to have coffee every morning when I woke up and he used to bring me my coffee. I said, ‘Did I give a good tip? ‘and he said no!"

Rapper EMINEM has slammed pop star MARIAH CAREY for denying that they were romantically involved in 2001.
The 34-year-old rapper launched into a tirade against the star on his Sirius Satellite Radio show.
He said, "Yes, me and Mariah did have a relationship for about a good six, seven months. (But) it didn’t work. "I wasn’t really into what she was into; our personalities collided. She’s a diva, and I’m a little more regular, I guess.
"I can never deny her talent, but the fact that she denied we ever had something, that’s bad." The pair met in 2001 to discuss a possible musical collaboration, but sparks began to fly and the two began dating.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine the following year (2002) Eminem said, "There’s truth to that. But on the whole personal level, I’m not really feeling it.
"I just don’t like her as a person." Carey was asked the same question by US interviewer LARRY KING in 2002 where she said, "I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. "I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don’t consider that dating somebody."

Aspiring rapper KEVIN FEDERLINE begged concert organisers not to cancel his appearance at New York City’s Webster Hall on Saturday night (04NOV06), despite poor ticket sales. BRITNEY SPEARS’ husband’s debut album, PLAYING WITH FIRE, was released last week (31OCT06) to a less than enthusiastic reception.
Only 300 fans showed up at the venue, which is designed to hold 1,500 revellers.
A bartender at the event tells American publication Star, "They were going to cancel this concert, but he begged them to keep it on. He had to fight with them to keep this concert." Federline was supposed to go on at 7 pm, but, the bartender reveals, "He was holding things up because there weren’t enough fans. He was backstage waiting for more people to show up.
"It was a bad idea - he shouldn’t have neglected the fans that were there." Federline finally took the stage at 10 pm - three hours late, and rapped for only half an hour. According to an eyewitness, by the last song, "only one-third of the audience had stayed until the end."

SIR ROGER MOORE has revealed a softer side, he’s a huge fan of British poet RUDYARD KIPLING.
The former JAMES BOND star revealed his admiration for the acclaimed writer at a literary event at the British Library in London last week (ends5NOV06), where he read 11 of Kipling’s poems to an audience.
He says, "I have always loved Kipling mainly because I can understand him. "I also admire him because of the way he turned down most of the honours offered to him - even a knighthood. I was very happy to accept mine."

CHRISTIAN BALE loved filming RESCUE DAWN with experimental director WERNER HERZOG, even though half the film’s crew walked out because of the treacherous jungle location.
The BATMAN actor insists he wasn’t put off by the dangerous Thailand set or Herzog’s off-beat directing style. He tells the New York Daily News, "We were in a jungle in Thailand, and would find ourselves many mornings with half the movie’s crew gone. So everybody took on different jobs to get by for a few days. Half the bloody crew walked out, and we just kept going! "But there were toenails being extracted and people being washed down rapids half-drowning, and at one point I had to pick up live snakes in the middle of a river. "You know, it didn’t disappoint."
