CRUISE CONSIDERS MUTE ROLE IN NEW GULF WAR DRAMA

TOM CRUISE is reportedly keen to keep his mouth shut in his next movie after staging talks with Warner Brothers executives about playing a mute Gulf War hero in the film adaptation of DAVE KING’s novel THE HA HA.
Cruise is slated to play a soldier, rendered mute by his injuries, who is charged with the care of a nine-year-old.
It’s not the only film on the slate for the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE star - he’s also considering playing a congressman fighting MERYL STREEP’s journalist over the truth about a platoon of US troops in Afghanistan, according to trade paper Daily Variety.
ROBERT REDFORD is slated to direct the film, titled LIONS FOR LAMBS.

CONAN PLANS BARE BONES SHOW FOR HALLOWEEN

US funnyman CONAN O’BRIEN will present the Halloween (31OCT06) episode of his TV chat show LATE NIGHT in `skelevision’.
Only skeletons with hair-pieces will appear on the show, while guests like actor OMAR EPPS and CNN anchorman LARRY KING will only be heard.
The show, featuring Epps and King originally aired in May (06).

TOM CRUISE TO BOLDLY GO…?

TOM CRUISE is in negotiations to reteam with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 director JJ ABRAMS for the next STAR TREK movie.
The movie superstar is reportedly a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise and jumped at the chance to play a cameo role in the new film, which will be directed by Abrams.
An insider tells Canada’s TV Guide magazine, "He didn’t even need to be begged to appear in it." It’s not known what role Cruise will play, but Trekkies in cyberspace are suggesting he should play a Starfleet Academy instructor.
Meanwhile, Abrams is currently auditioning actors for the roles of a young SCOTTY and young BONES in the film, according to reports.

DICKINSON IS A TV HIT

SYLVESTER STALLONE’s ex JANICE DICKINSON is celebrating after landing a Christmas (06) TV special and a second series of her reality show THE JANICE DICKINSON MODELING AGENCY.
The first season of the show, in which Dickinson attempts to create a real-life fashion industry force, was such a hit at US cable network Oxygen that TV executives there have upgraded the programme to an hour slot.
Meanwhile, the former supermodel will star in CHRISTMAS WITH THE DICKINSONS, which will air in December (06).

THERON TO PROTEST FOR BOYFRIEND’S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

CHARLIZE THERON is set to star in boyfriend STUART TOWNSEND’s directorial debut - and she’ll be bringing a slew of famous friends to the set.
The Irish actor has written the screenplay for THE BATTLE IN SEATTLE, which is based on the protests and riots surrounding the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Washington state, and will direct the project when it goes before cameras next month (NOV06).
As well as Theron, the film will feature OUTKAST star ANDRE BENJAMIN, RAY LIOTTA and WOODY HARRELSON.
Townsend will use actual footage from the rioting, which was declared a state of emergency, to tell his story, which will focus on the lives of protestors, politicians, police and Seattle locals and how they were affected by the incident.

FREEMAN COOKS UP CARIBBEAN TREATS IN NEW BOOK

Movie star MORGAN FREEMAN has cooked up a new charity recipe book by asking a host of his famous friends to dish up the details about their favourite Caribbean cuisine.
The actor asked pals ALICIA KEYS, MICHAEL DOUGLAS and TOM HANKS and many others to talk about their favourite exotic dishes and then went to top Caribbean chefs to ask them for their top tips about island cuisine.
The end result is a new cookbook, MORGAN FREEMAN & FRIENDS: CARIBBEAN COOKING FOR A CAUSE, which will be sold to raise funds for the Grenada Relief Fund.
Freeman is no stranger to cooking up a treat or two - the actor co-owns a restaurant, called Madidi, in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

ROMANTIC LACHEY CROONS TO GIRLFRIEND AT ATLANTA SHOW

Pop star NICK LACHEY left his girlfriend VANESSA MINNILLO red faced during a recent show in Atlanta, Georgia when he insisted she join him onstage for a romantic tune.
Lachey sat the MTV presenter on a stool in the middle of the stage and caressed and kissed her as he sang a romantic ballad during his concert in Atlanta on Friday night (20OCT06).
Bashful Minnillo spent much of the performance hiding under her hat as her man crooned to her.

MANSON SET FOR SEX CHANGE IN ROCKY HORROR REMAKE

Rocker MARILYN MANSON is in secret talks to play transvestite DR FRANK-N-FURTER in a remake of the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, according to US reports.
Manson reportedly let slip he was considering the part, played famously by TIM CURRY in the cult 1975 film, in a recent TV interview.
The remake will tentatively be called simply ROCKY HORROR, according to website bloodydisgusting.com.

WORLD TRADE CENTER WINS FIRST FILM HONOUR OF THE SEASON

OLIVER STONE’s gripping 9/11 drama WORLD TRADE CENTER was named Best Film in the first major awards show of the 2006/2007 season, beating out PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST at the Hollywood Awards last night (23OCT06).
The night’s big award was voted for by online film fans.
The other big winner at last night’s honours was ROBIN WILLIAMS, who claimed the Hollywood Career Achievement Award and poked fun at his recent rehab stint.
The recovering alcoholic told the star-studded Beverly Hilton audience, "It’s fun to come out of rehab and come somewhere with an open bar." Meanwhile, FOREST WHITAKER earned the Hollywood Actor of The Year Award for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator IDI AMIN in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, while PENELOPE CRUZ’s turn in VOLVER earned her the Hollywood Actress of the Year Award.
BEN AFFLECK claimed the Best Supporting Actor prize for playing TV SUPERMAN GEORGE REEVES in HOLLYWOODLAND.
Affleck took time to heap praise on his actress wife JENNIFER GARNER, who had to leave the event early to take care of the couple’s baby daughter, during his acceptance speech.
He cooed, "The woman who is babysitting my daughter tonight, she’s the reason I was able to be here. She’s, in fact, the reason most of the good things have happened to me in my life. She is spectacular." Affleck’s FORCES OF NATURE co-star SANDRA BULLOCK picked up the night’s Best Supporting Actress trophy for her portrayal of HARPER LEE in new film INFAMOUS.
LINDSAY LOHAN and DEREK LUKE were honoured with Breakthrough Actor and Actress of the Year Awards, while Lohan’s starry movie BOBBY was handed the Hollywood Ensemble Acting Award.
Oliver Stone also claimed the Director of The Year prize for World Trade Center.

EVANS DIVORCE COURT DATE SET

LATEST: Country star SARA EVANS and her husband CRAIG SCHELSKE will face off against each other in court in Tennessee on Thursday (26OCT06).
The warring couple’s divorce proceedings will begin following a hearing in the Nashville suburb of Franklin.
Schelske will request the dissolution of a restraining order, which was issued against him after Evans filed for divorce on 12 October (06) to start proceedings in Williamson County Chancery Court.
Evans’ attorneys reportedly filed additional motions yesterday (23OCT06) including a gag order to prevent Evans, Schelske and their attorneys from discussing the divorce case with the media.
Both parties have alleged the other cheated.

JIMMY WEBB HONOURED IN NASHVILLE

Songwriter JIMMY WEBB was honoured by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in Nashville, Tennessee last night (23OCT06) and thrilled famous fans with a medley of his country hits.
The three-time Grammy Award winner was handed ASCAP’s Voice of Music accolade at the 44th annual ASCAP Country Music Awards gala as fans like JON BON JOVI, KENNY CHESNEY and BRAD PAISLEY paid tribute to Webb’s songs.
Webb took the stage to perform three of his biggest hits - WICHITA LINEMAN, BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX and GALVESTON.
The tribute also included a guest appearance by Webb’s close friend and collaborator GLEN CAMPBELL.
Previous recipients of the Voice of Music honour include GARTH BROOKS and songwriter DIANE WARREN.
In other ASCAP awards, BRETT JAMES and RIVERS RUTHERFORD shared Songwriter of the Year honours and JOHN RICH was named Songwriter/Artist of the Year.
AMERICAN IDOL winner CARRIE UNDERWOOD’s JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL was named Country Song of the Year.

METALLICA STAR PULLS OUT OF SUPERGROUP

Former METALLICA star JASON NEWSTED has been forced to pull out supergroup ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA two months before their first show after suffering a major shoulder injury.
The rocker reportedly tore his left bicep and rotator cuff while trying to catch a bass that had fallen off an amplifier.
A spokesman claims Newsted requires surgery and will not be able to return to the stage for nine months.
Rock Star Supernova, founded by TOMMY LEE and GILBY CLARKE and featuring reality TV show winner LUKAS ROSSI, hope to continue with album release plans and a New Year’s Eve (31DEC06) concert in Las Vegas, Nevada without Newsted.
Lee admits the group will replace the bass player temporarily, but Newsted will always be welcomed back.
The drummer says, "Jason was always the right guy for this band and we’ll miss having him with us as we kick off our album and tour, but we know he’ll be back as soon as he can pick up and play."

BUSTA RHYMES AVOIDS WEAPON CHARGES

LATEST: Rapper BUSTA RHYMES will not face trial on charges of possession of a weapon, a New York City court judge has ruled.
The hip-hop star, real name TREVOR SMITH, was arrested on 12 August (06) for allegedly assaulting teenage fan ROBERT LEBRON following the AmsterJam Music Festival on Randall’s Island.
Smith was charged with misdemeanour third-degree assault and harassment and weapon possession after cops allegedly found a 10 inch (25.4 centimetre) knife in his sports utility vehicle (SUV).
At a brief hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court today (24OCT06), Judge SHAWNDYA SIMPSON rejected the weapons charges, but the rapper will still go to trial for assault and harassment charges.
The GIMME SOME MORE hitmaker, 34, is scheduled to return to court on 11 December (06).

BRITNEY’S BABY GETS A NEW NAME - JAYDEN

BRITNEY SPEARS and husband KEVIN FEDERLINE have finally decided on a name for their second son after filing a birth certificate at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office.
Initial reports suggested the tot would share big brother SEAN PRESTON’s initials and be called SUTTON PIERCE, but the official documentation, obtained by news website TMZ.com, states the child will be named JAYDEN JAMES FEDERLINE.
Little Jayden was born on 12 September (06), just four days before his brother’s first birthday.

FOXY BROWN SENTENCED TO PROBATION

LATEST: Raunchy rapper FOXY BROWN was sentenced to three years’ probation for assaulting two manicurists in a New York City court today (24OCT06).
The hip-hop star, real name INGA MARCHAND, originally pleaded guilty in August (06) to kicking and smacking employees of Manhattan’s Bloomie Nails in August 2004, but attempted to change her plea when she realised her sentence would involve the lengthy probation, during which she’d have to undergo drug testing and attend anger management classes.
In court today, Marchand claimed she had been rushed when she made her guilty plea agreement, and insisted, "I’m innocent." Manhattan Criminal Court Judge MELISSA C JACKSON said, "The purpose of a reargument is not to let the parties go over issues that have already been decided." Judge Jackson warned the CHYNA DOLL hitmaker she could face a year in jail if she did not abide by her probation terms.

MILLS McCARTNEY SUES PAPERS

LATEST: SIR PAUL McCARTNEY’s estranged wife HEATHER MILLS is suing two British newspapers over "false, damaging and immensely upsetting" statements surrounding her divorce from the former BEATLE legend.
Tabloids the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard have been singled out as the main subjects of the legal proceedings by Mills, with additional action also being taken against The Sun.
The Daily Mail published extracts from leaked divorce papers last week (18OCT06) in which the 38-year-old accuses McCartney of physical and verbal abuse during their four-year marriage.
A statement released by Mills’ lawyers said she had been vilified in the media and was now being stalked by photographers as a result of the published articles.
Her lawyer MISHCON DE REYA says, "Her time and resources are not infinite.
She cannot sue - for now, at least - every single newspaper that has published false, damaging, and immensely upsetting statements about her.
"She should not thereby be taken to have accepted that these statements are true." Mills and McCartney announced their split in May (06). They have a two-year-old daughter BEATRICE.

McCARTNEY GETS LOST

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY was so distracted by his recent troubles with estranged wife HEATHER MILLS, he became hopelessly lost whilst visiting an old friend. The ex-BEATLE was making the regular car journey to English musician JOOLS HOLLAND’s house. He then became confused and had to be led by a cab driver to the Kent, southern England, address.
Taxi man PAUL O’LEARY says, "I couldn’t believe it. He wound down his window and asked if I could tell him where the B200 (English road) was.
"I asked him where he was going and told him to follow me.
"I led him about four or five miles to Cooling Castle and then he got out and gave me £20 and an autograph. It was surreal. He seemed a really nice bloke."

ANISTON TAKES TO THE STAGE FOR CHARITY

JENNIFER ANISTON made her Broadway debut last night (23OCT06) when she joined ROSIE PEREZ in a one-off production at a benefit theatre show.
Aniston played a single woman looking for love in THREE GIRLS AND BOB alongside Perez, LYNN WHITFIELD and DAVID CROSS in New York City’s Times Square.
The 10-minute production and five other plays were conceived, written, rehearsed and performed during Monday for the Sixth Annual 24 Hour Plays, which raises money to bring arts education to local schools.
WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP star Perez enthuses, "We had a real boost from Jennifer Aniston. She was as sweet as pie. I really appreciated her coming because she raised the profile of tonight’s event and that is going to help so much. She didn’t have to do this. She didn’t have to take time out of her schedule.
"The 24 Hour Plays people approached her and she said yes. But when she found out about Working Playground, she was over the moon. She said, ‘I’ll do all the press. I’ll do whatever you want.’" Other actors participating in the fundraiser include ANNA PAQUIN, KIERAN CULKIN, JULIANNA MARGULIES, SAM ROCKWELL, ELIZABETH BERKELEY, LIEV SCHREIBER and FISHER STEVENS.
