HAMMOND: ‘I’M SO LUCKY’
British TV presenter RICHARD HAMMOND has spoken out for the first time about his horrifying 300-mile-per-hour (483-kilometre-per-hour) jet car crash last month (20SEP06), insisting he thought he was going to die.
The TOP GEAR star was filming a stunt for the popular BBC motoring show when his dragster careered off the track near York, England, leaving Hammond with severe head trauma.
Miraculously, the 36-year-old is now ready to return home from hospital and he admits he’s been "so bloody lucky".
Hammond says, "I was upside down inhaling a field. My nose and eyes were full of earth. I’d gone ploughing on my head.
"My very last thought was, ‘Oh b**ger, that’s gone wrong. Well, we’re checking out now. You’ve had it.’ "At the time of the crash I was doing 288 miles per hour so its incredible that every doctor I’ve spoken to tells me I’m on course for a 100 per cent recovery."
