Acclaimed Aborigine-language movie TEN CANOES was the toast of the Flanders Film Festival in Europe at the weekend (21OCT06), claiming the event’s top honour.
The film, the first Australian movie released in the Aboriginal tongue, won the Grand Prize at the festival and $25,000 (£13,890) to promote the film in Belgium.
Ten Canoes, directed by PETER DJIGIRR and ROLF DE HEER, also claimed the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in France earlier this year (06).

PARIS HILTON has topped a grisly new poll as the celebrity film fans would most like to see as the victim in a horror movie.
The socialite-turned-actress/singer was killed off in horror film remake HOUSE OF WAX, but fans want to see Hilton meet another gruesome end, according to a new Harris Interactive survey.
The SIMPLE LIFE star claimed 39 per cent of the vote, beating LINDSAY LOHAN, who scored 18 per cent.

CLINT EASTWOOD filmed the stunning Iwo Jima invasion scenes in back-to-back war epics LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA and FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS in Iceland to respect the dead buried on the sacred Japanese island.
The movie maker was granted special access to the infamous World War Two battleground, where US troops killed 12,000 Japanese soldiers - but chose not to shoot the "pyrotechnics" of the invasion in an effort to respect the dead.
He says, "I went and I talked to the Governor of Tokyo… and he ironically is a filmmaker - he has directed a few movies and he has written a few movies.
"I explained to him what I wanted to do and how I wanted to tell the story of this and he kind of said OK… but he didn’t know quite the pyrotechnics.
"It’s (Iwo Jima) a shrine for them (Japanese) because there’s 12,000 unaccounted-for bodies still there, so I knew they weren’t going to go for the pyrotechnics of a re-invasion, so we went to Iceland, which is also a geothermal island with black sand beaches.
"Iceland in August is probably the same climate as Iwo in February, so it all worked out fine and then we went back to Iwo for a few tune-ups."

Sci-fi movie flop THE ISLAND is at the centre of a copyright fight after a federal judge in New York ruled last week (ends20OCT06) that there is enough evidence to suggest the film is similar to another project.
JUDGE SHIRA A SCHEINDLIN (corr) has accepted that claims The Island, which starred EWAN McGREGOR and SCARLETT JOHANSSON, was based on 1979 movie PARTS: THE CLONUS HORROR.
Executives behind The Island at DreamWorks and Warner Brothers urged authorities to dismiss the case, but Judge Scheindlin has opted to let a jury decide the outcome of the case, which was filed by Clonus producer-director ROBERT S FIVESON.
The case is scheduled for next February (07)

LATEST: Defiant movie star WESLEY SNIPES is refusing to return to America and face tax fraud charges, insisting he’ll continue shooting new film GALLOWWALKER in Namibia.
Tax officials have issues a warrant for the BLADE star’s arrest, but the actor has decided his career must come first.
Screen writer JOANNE REAY insists Snipes is filming in the Namibian desert and has no plans to flee justice before he completes the shoot.
She says, "We are shooting and we are continuing to shoot. We are aware of the issue around the tax charges but we are not discussing it." Snipes has been indicted on eight counts of tax fraud, accused of trying to cheat the government out of nearly $12 million (£6.6 million).

LATEST: ANNA NICOLE SMITH refused to show up for a scheduled deposition meeting with her ex LARRY BIRKHEAD’s attorney DEBRA OPRI in the Bahamas today (23OCT06).
The lawyer flew to Nassau over the weekend to meet with the busty blonde and discuss paternity issues with her as part of Birkhead’s custody battle over the model/actress’ baby girl, who he claims is his.
His legal spat comes after Smith’s attorney HOWARD K STERN announced he was baby DANNIELYNN’s biological father on US TV show LARRY KING LIVE. Birkhead insists he’s the father and has asked for a paternity test so he can prove it.
Opri says, "Larry Birkhead has offered to settle the paternity action in private. Anna Nicole Smith refused. The offer is now off the table. She wants to play high stakes poker… the stakes are going to get higher." The angry lawyer has appeared on US TV news show Extra with a firm message to Smith: "Listen to me and hear what I have to say - you want to put this case to rest… allow the test.
"I’m, not going away. Larry Birkhead isn’t either. Larry Birkhead is the father.
My client Larry Birkhead loves that little girl. He conceived that child with Anna Nicole… He planned for the birth… They prepared for the birth.
"Howard K Stern came on the Larry King show… and he said, `I’m the father… and if Larry Birkhead was smart he’d get an attorney.’ Well, Larry Birkhead is smart… He got a good attorney. I know what I’m doing… and I know how to fight."

Country legend DOLLY PARTON is set to embark on her first full European tour since the 1970s, claiming the trek is "a dream come true." Parton has been trying to make European dates a reality for years but rarely leaves America due to commitments, which include national tours and her Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.
The one-month European outing next spring (07) will feature shows in Norway, Sweden, Finland, England and Scotland. It will kick off with a show in Denmark and close in Dublin, Ireland on 2 April (07).

Influential Seattle, Washington rock group MALFUNKSHUN has reformed to honour the death of frontman ANDY WOOD.
The late singer’s brother and bandmate KEVIN WOOD has found a stash of his sibling’s lyrics that he never worked into songs before his death 16 years ago (1990) and now he wants to return to the studio with his bandmates to record new material.
The proposed project will result in the release of the group’s first full-length album.
Despite the fact the group rarely recorded or toured outside its native Washington state, Malfunkshun is often linked with the area’s grunge scene.
After disbanding Malfunkshun, Wood formed grunge supergroup MOTHER LOVE BONE with PEARL JAM stars STONE GOSSARD and JEFF AMENT.
The group’s upcoming debut album will feature Malfunkshun favourites like LOVE CHILD and MY LOVE, as well as the new tracks featuring the late Wood’s lyrics.

Troubled country crooner KEITH URBAN’s outspoken uncle has offered to wring his nephew’s neck for failing to stay sober.
Urban checked into a rehab facility last week (ends20OCT06) in an effort to curb his alcoholism and relapsing recently, and his dad’s brother BRIAN is far from impressed.
Speaking to Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, the New Zealander fumes, "I’d like to get hold of him. I would scrag him (wring his neck)." The singer’s less-than-supportive uncle fears a second stint in rehab will prove to be a waste of time and money: "Well he’s done it before, hasn’t he? And it didn’t fix him… "Why should it work the second time?"

Feuding brothers NICK and AARON CARTER went to war on their reality TV show HOUSE OF CARTERS after the I WANT CANDY hitmaker revealed he’d dated his older sibling’s ex, PARIS HILTON.
The younger Carter tried to explain to the BACKSTREET BOYS star that he only agreed to dine with Hilton to get information out of her about a rumoured romance with CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY while she was dating Nick.
But the fight, which appears on the Carter family reality series, escalated when big brother Nick accused Aaron of dating the socialite behind his back.
Speaking about the spat on TYRA BANKS’ daily chat show this morning (23OCT06), Nick Carter revealed, "The fight didn’t start off over her at all.
It was an insecurity that I had developed over the years.
"He had taken her out on a date after I had broken up with her, (or rather) she took (him) out. He was 16 she was 20-something.
"He told me later on that he found out who she had cheated on me with because she didn’t say it was with anybody… He helped me out." The younger Carter explains, "I had to find out some information. I had to be a little sneaky. I just found out that she wasn’t being a good girlfriend to Nick." The revelation about Hilton’s infidelity ended the romance between the couple and led to reports Carter had beaten up his ex in a jealous rage.
The pop star maintains those reports were hurtful and false: "Nothing like that ever happened."

EAGLES star DON HENLEY is to be honoured with the US Recording Academy’s MusiCares Person of The Year honour in 2007.
The HOTEL CALIFORNIA rocker will be recognised for his philanthropic work at a gala dinner and concert to be held in Los Angeles in February (07).

LATEST: Troubled country star KEITH URBAN has pulled out of a planned performance at the 40th annual Country Music Association (CMA) to allow himself more time to tackle his alcoholism.
The singer, who is married to actress NICOLE KIDMAN, checked himself into a rehab facility last week (ends20OCT06).
Urban issued an official statement about his "relapse" to fans through his publicist, who has since confirmed the Aussie will not be performing at the CMAs on 6 November (06), as planned.
Publicist JUDY McDONOUGH states the singer has cancelled all immediate promotional appearances.
Urban, who has a history of cocaine and alcohol abuse, is nominated for four awards at next month’s CMAs, including Song of The Year for TONIGHT I WANNA CRY and the coveted Entertainer of the Year honour.
Despite the problems swirling around his personal life, Urban’s new album, LOVE, PAIN & THE WHOLE CRAZY THING, will be released as planned on 7 November (06).

THE RUNAWAYS rocker SANDY WEST has lost her battle with lung cancer. She was 47.
West formed the all-girl rock group with JOAN JETT, LITA FORD and CHERIE CURRIE, paving the way for other girl power acts like THE BANGLES and the GO GOS.

Late comedy legend PETER COOK has been accused of physically abusing his first wife after finding out she had an affair. The comic allegedly threw WENDY SNOWDEN down some stairs and broke lover SIMON GOUGH’s jaw in two places when he discovered her infidelity with the actor.
The startling revelations are made by Snowden, who was married to the BEDAZZLED actor from 1963 to 1971, in a tell-all biography SO FAREWELL THEN, which describes the ‘untold life’ of Cook, who died in 1995.
