American playwright/screenwriter NEIL SIMON collected the Mark Twain Prize at the annual Kennedy Center awards ceremony in New York last night (15OCT06).
THE ODD COUPLE writer was joined onstage by his wife ELAINE JOYCE when he picked up the honour at the prestigious event, which celebrates entertainers who "create humour from their uniquely American experiences".
ROBERT REDFORD, who starred in the 1967 movie adaptation of Simon’s BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, said, "Some say he’s the most successful playwright since (WILLIAM) SHAKESPEARE. Except he’s more prolific and he’s still writing." Redford received a Kennedy Center award last year (05).

Hollywood funnyman VINCE VAUGHN is taking legal action against three newspapers after they printed pictures of him allegedly kissing a mystery woman at a London charity event.
The SWINGERS star, currently dating JENNIFER ANISTON, is furious he has been made to look like a love rat by British newspapers the Sun and Daily Mirror, as well as the New York Post.
The UK publications printed the photos, along with articles suggesting he had been unfaithful to former FRIENDS star Aniston at the Old Vic theatre event earlier this month (OCT06).
Vaughn maintains the suggestion he was involved in a passionate embrace was false, according to London lawyers Schillings, who are representing the actor.
Aniston herself denied the break-up reports on Wednesday (11OCT06), telling talk show host OPRAH WINFREY that she and Vince are "still on".

Singer MONICA was forced to overcome her embarrassment during the recording of her new album, because everyone in the studio read her diaries.
The R&B star based her latest disc THE MAKINGS OF ME on her own experiences, and she found it uncomfortable knowing her colleagues knew her inner-most thoughts.
She says, "That was kind of private to hand over. It was going into the hands of about seven or eight people. It was difficult to do something like that the first time around." And the album’s producer JERMAINE DUPRI even named an album track after one particular diary entry.
Monica adds, "’Was it something I did wrong?’ When Jermaine heard me say that, he wondered why the guy would pick the other woman, who doesn’t look better nor has anything going for her. That’s when he came up with the next song, WHY HER."

OZZY OSBOURNE’s son JACK OSBOURNE is so fed up with pop singer-turned-reality TV star AARON CARTER he would "gladly kick the s**t out of" him.

Bhangra pop singer DALER MEHNDI has been ordered to return to court later this month (30OCT06) to face charges of immigration fraud.
The Indian music star appeared before a local court in Patiala last week (11OCT06), but the case was adjourned.
Mehndi and his brother SHAMSHER are facing charges under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Indian Passport Act for allegedly sending people abroad illegally through his troupe.
The case was brought after one of their reported victims, BAKSHISH SINGH, complained he was duped of a large sum of money by the Mehndi brothers, who had promised to bring him on tour and leave him in a western country to live.
After failing to carry out the plan, the Mehndis allegedly threatened Singh to ensure his silence.

Chicago rapper RHYMEFEST is meeting British politician DAVID CAMERON this Thursday (19OCT06) to defend hip-hop music and culture, after the Conservative Party leader recently claimed rap music encourages violence.
Rhymecast, who won a Grammy Award in 2005 for co-writing KANYE WEST’s hit single JESUS WALKS, will talk with Cameron at the House Of Commons in London to challenge the politician’s views on the genre.
In August (06), Rhymefest - real name CHE SMITH - wrote an open letter to Cameron and was surprised to receive a reply.
Smith writes in his blog on website MySpace.com, "I challenged (Cameron) to let me perform for him and have dialogue with him about the importance of hip-hop in the community, as well as in the political arena. I never expected a response.
"However, I’m scheduled to travel to the UK in order to have this dialogue about hip-hop with Mr Cameron in front of MTV and BBC cameras. Whoever thought that the power of the pen was truly mightier than the sword?"

The ‘Hung Up’ singer’s bodyguard was seen carrying the 13-month-old boy, called David Banda, onto a plane reportedly headed for Johannesburg today (16.10.06).
Malawi’s Human Rights Consultative Committee had tried to block the adoption plans earlier today, claiming the singer had not adhered to the country’s strict inter-country adoption laws.
However, it has been reported that the custody process could have been fast-tracked for the wealthy celebrity allowing her to side-step strict regulations.
Sources believe Madonna may have used the flexible American legal system to allow her to adopt the boy.
Malawian law prohibits adoptions by non-residents, but officials have granted an exemption for the 48-year-old pop superstar.
Boniface Mandere - a spokesman for Eye of the Child, a leading children’s rights group in Malawi - fumed: "The government haven’t followed the law.
What has happened is a shortcut." Last week, Malawi’s High Court granted Madonna and her husband, director Guy Ritchie, an interim order allowing them to take custody of the child.
However, Madonna and Guy were forced to leave the Southern African country last Friday (13.10.06) without David, who did not have a passport.
David’s mother, Marita, died a month after the child was born. Since then he had been living in the Home of Hope Orphan Care Centre in Mchinji, a village close to the borders with Zambia.

An offshoot of STEVEN SPIELBERG’s video project honouring survivors of the Holocaust is being launched in British schools today (16OCT06).
The Oscar-winning film-maker’s RECOLLECTIONS: EYEWITNESSES REMEMBER THE HOLOCAUST DVD programme contains the memories of over 50,000 survivors.
Schoolchildren can learn about the World War II genocide using its interactive technology.
Recollections is being launched in Pimlico School in London and uses the testimonies, collected by Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation, of survivors including Jews, homosexuals and political prisoners.

LATEST: Charity workers in Malawi are seeking a court injunction to halt pop queen MADONNA’s bid to adopt a baby boy, claiming the move is illegal.
The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has ruled the adoption of one-year-old DAVID BANDA goes against state laws because Madonna is not a citizen of the African country.
HRCC chairman JUSTIN DZONZI says, "The laws of Malawi are clear that if one wants to adopt a child, one has to stay with the child for at least 18 months for assessment.
"If Madonna wants to adopt this baby she has to stay here." The MATERIAL GIRL and her husband GUY RITCHIE returned to the UK at the weekend (14-15OCT06), after being granted an interim court order approving the adoption.
Banda is still being looked after in the southern African country while passport and visa issues are dealt with.

Italian film icon SOPHIA LOREN is fuming after being snubbed by organisers of the Rome Film Festival, who failed to invite the TWO WOMEN star to the opening ceremony.

TWIN PEAKS director DAVID LYNCH has defended his new movie’s three hour running time, insisting, "This is the length that feels correct." INLAND EMPIRE has been blasted by film critics since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last month (06SEP06), with one savage review calling it "an interminable bore", but Lynch feels the argument over length is a poor one.
He says, "A time restraint is so arbitrary and kind of meaningless.
"This is the length that feels correct." The movie, which currently has no film distribution, tells the story of an actress, played by KING KONG’s NAOMI WATTS, embarking on a big screen comeback.
Lynch, who is famed for his quirky movies, is rumoured to have shot the film without a full script, drafting each scene just before it was filmed.

The BBC has slammed reports British comedian JIMMY TARBUCK is suffering from deteriorating health after he pulled out of a celebrity reality show this weekend (14-15OCT06).
A spokeswoman for the network has denied reports the 66-year-old was rushed to hospital after suffering a heart murmur, insisting he was merely diagnosed with high blood pressure by his doctor.
He was due to appear on dance show STRICTLY COME DANCING.

Punjabi pop star GURSEWAK MANN has been arrested in India over allegations he "outraged the modesty of a young woman" in a nightclub toilet.
The unidentified woman accuses Mann, the younger brother of famous Bhangra pop singer and actor HARBHAJAN MANN, and a pal of taking indecent photographs of her on his mobile phone inside the ladies bathroom last week (ends15OCT06).
The singer denies the incident insisting his friend, who was visiting the North Park resort club in Panchkula from Canada, was taking his picture.
Mann was arrested by police on Tuesday (10OCT06) but has since been released on bail.
