English actress EMILY BLUNT was determined to make her role in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA British - because she insists she wanted a "pretentious" accent to portray her fashion-conscious character.
The rising screen star’s character was intended to be American, but Blunt managed to wriggle out of having to perform a US dialect when she convinced director DAVID FRANKEL of her reasons.
She says, "I was originally supposed to play her as an American girl, but as soon as I read the script I felt very strongly that she should be British.
"There is something very pretentious about a British accent and I thought it would be quite funny to play.
"So I put my foot down and luckily the director agreed."

Acclaimed Spanish movie-maker PEDRO ALMODOVAR is desperate to make an English language film, but fears Hollywood will be too constricting.
The VOLVER director has already considered a string of movie projects including THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE HOURS and THE HUMAN STAIN. However, he’s convinced if he had committed to any his creative control would have been curtailed.
He says, "I was always scared of losing my independence and freedom.
"My experience, talking with other directors here, even (MARTIN) SCORSESE, I said, ‘Oh my God, this is incredible. I feel more lucky than you, I mean I work in much better conditions than you.’" Almodovar has already won two Academy awards and Volver, starring PENELOPE CRUZ, has already been chosen by Spain to represent the country for best foreign film Oscar at next year’s (07) ceremony.

KATE WINSLET has declared JACK BLACK is the "sexiest film star" she has ever worked with - despite starring roles alongside LEONARDO DiCAPRIO in TITANIC and JUDE LAW in upcoming release THE HOLIDAY.
Black appears as Winslet’s leading man in The Holiday, which also stars CAMERON DIAZ and Law.
The English beauty tells British film magazine Empire, "He doesn’t have any of that tortured comedian thing that you sometimes see; not at all. He’s a very funny, sweet, hilarious person who wilfully tries to make you corpse in the middle of your scene.
"There were so many moments where Jack was acting off-camera for me and you can just see my face crumbling, while I try to keep it together. He was absolute bliss to work with."

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER star ANTHONY HEAD insists we haven’t seen the last of his iconic role as GILES in the hit show - claiming the BBC might film a spin off about the character’s adventure in the UK.
The spin-off featuring Buffy’s mentor has been long rumoured, but was believed to have come to a halt when Buffy creator JOSS WHEDON started working on the movie version of WONDER WOMAN.
But Head hasn’t given up hope of fans seeing Giles for the first time since the show ended in 2003.
Head, who is currently on voicing duties for video game DESTROY ALL HUMANS 2, says, "There were talks with the BBC about following Giles’ adventures in London but I think it’s dead. You never know though.
"It would have been great. Joss wrote this amazing piece but he is busy with Wonder Woman so I can’t see it happening for a long time."

Bollywood star SAIF ALI KHAN has blasted reports he got into a bar brawl in New York, branding the article "slanderous".
The New York Post claimed the actor stirred up trouble by squabbling with his co-star RANI MUKHERJI and also vexing the owner of the Madame X lounge.
Khan, who is in the US to shoot new film TARA RUM PUM, was allegedly picking arguments at the trendy bar after downing shots of Tequila.
However, the furious star retorts, "I finished my day’s work… and went to a bar for a drink. The owner was a young Indian. He asked me for a couple of pictures with his cousins. He offered to pay for my drinks and told me to come back any time. He was really polite, and so was I.
"The next thing I know is the New York Post carries an article that says I had a fight with Rani Mukherji on the set, which was bulls**t, and that I threw my weight around the bar which was slanderous. It’s ok to write about an argument on the sets, though I didn’t have one. But this? "Misbehaving in public and being a bad boy isn’t my scene. I’ve never misbehaved in public. Someone calls me up from Mumbai and point blank asks if I was thrown out of the bar. It was very humiliating. My immediate reaction was to sue the Post. But now I’ve decided to dismiss it as nasty Page Six gossip."

JACLYN SMITH has rushed to the side of her friend and CHARLIE’S ANGELS co-star FARRAH FAWCETT, following the blonde actress’ diagnosis of cancer of the intestine.
Smith, who has successfully battled breast cancer, is regularly in touch with Fawcett, who confirmed she had the disease last week (06OCT06).
Smith says, "She’s great, and she’s going to be fine. In fact, she made me laugh.
"She is handling this like she handles everything else in her life, with strength and courage and a positive attitude.
"She said, ‘I’m coming to your house every night.’ Because I eat very healthy. She’s right down the street, so she’ll come, and we’ll just stay healthy together."

MANIC STREET PREACHERS rockers JAMES DEAN BRADFIELD and NICKY WIRE have branded do-gooding musicians as "a bunch of c**ts".
Lead singer Bradfield and guitarist Wire of the Welsh group lashed out not only at bands who spend most of the their time doing charity work or criticising politicians, but all musicians in general.
Bradfield says, "Most musicians are jealous of each other and will stick the knife between the shoulder blades of another musician." Wire agrees with his bandmate, adding, "Musicians love having a go at politicians and doing charity events, but generally musicians are the biggest bunch of c**ts you could possibly ever meet.
"There’s not many musicians I’d like to have a conversation with."

MUSE frontman MATT BELLAMY has risked incurring the wrath of animal rights groups by confessing he once strapped a praying mantis onto a rocket and fired it into space.
The spiky-haired rocker regrets the incident, which happened this year (06) while the band recorded their latest album BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS, but insists there were no animals hurt in the bizarre stunt.
The MUSCLE MUSEUM singer, says, "I shot a praying mantis into Space. We were in France recording the last album and the insects were making us a bit phobic, so we stuck a praying mantis on a rocket.
"We felt guilty but when the rocket landed he was fine. It was probably like a little holiday for him."

British rockers KEANE are planning to beat the bootleggers by selling instant live recordings of their gigs just 10 minutes after they leave the stage.
The SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW stars are offering the compact discs in order to combat the number of illegal live tapes which are sold online.
Just 1000 discs will be released per gig.
A spokeswoman for the band confirms, "The CDs will be recorded, mixed, mastered in real time, backstage after the gigs, and then pressed and sold to fans in the lobby as they leave."

The couple’s generous contribution was announced on Tuesday (10.10.06) - on what would have been the late American journalist’s birthday.
Brad and Angelina - who are making a film about the life and death of the reporter, who was kidnapped and killed by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in 2002 - said in a statement: "On this day our thoughts go out to Danny’s family.
"The Daniel Pearl Foundation is celebrating this day, his birthday, with music festivals around the world. The festivals are a great reminder of not just Danny’s work as a journalist but of his life and his love of music." In the movie, ‘A Mighty Heart’, Angelina plays Daniel’s widowed wife Mariane Pearl.
It’s not the first time the couple have put their hands in their pockets for charity recently.
In September, Brad and Angelina donated $2 million to two humanitarian organizations who are working to try and abolish child poverty and childhood diseases around the world.
