HAWKINS’ THREE-YEAR COCAINE BINGE
Former THE DARKNESS frontman JUSTIN HAWKINS spent a staggering $270,000 (£150,000) on cocaine in the three years after he shot to stardom in 2003.
The I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE rocker, who quit the band yesterday (10OCT06), found his drug intake spiralling out of control as he struggled to deal with stardom following the phenomenal success of debut LP PERMISSION TO LAND.
After three years of destructive drink and drug abuse, Hawkins checked into London rehab clinic The Priory in August (06) and has now been clean for nine weeks - and he has decided to step away from life as a rock star.
He says, "I hit absolute rock bottom. I spent over £150,000 on cocaine in three years - a frightening amount.
"I was consuming up to five grams a day which cost me £1,000 a week, sometimes more. I regularly used to stay up for four days at a time on coke and alcohol binges.
"I became secretive, volatile and verbally abusive, a really unpleasant person to be around. There were lots of periods I don’t even remember, blackouts.
"It has affected every single aspect of my life, with the band and my girlfriend SUE. I feel like I’ve lost three years of my life."
