SUMMERS THREATENED WITH DEATH BY YAKUZA
Former THE POLICE guitarist ANDY SUMMERS was once threatened with death by Japanese gangsters unless his manager made a massive payment to the Yakuza thugs.
The ROXANNE hitmaker was touring with ERIC BURDON AND THE NEW ANIMALS in the Far Eastern country when the group’s concert promoters revealed themselves to be less than scrupulous.
Summers writes in his autobiography ONE TRAIN LATER, "Apparently our promoters were part of Yakuza - the Japanese mafia. They had captured (our manager) DAVID last night and taken him at gunpoint to a filthy hole somewhere in the bowels of Tokyo.
"In this dark spot they threatened to cut off his fingers unless he signed security notes to the tune of $250,000 and added that they also might kill one of the band, probably the lead guitarist; in fact, they have actually named me as the target."
