LATEST: Pop star JESSICA SIMPSON is desperately trying to repair the damage caused by her former publicist ROB SHUTER after the media debacle surrounding her relationship with JOHN MAYER.
The singer has been placing personal calls to all of the editors of the major celebrity weekly magazines in the US to apologise for Shuter’s actions, which culminated in a recent cover story on US publication People claiming she had found love with Mayer.
Simpson and Mayer have since called off their relationship and insist that the media coverage surrounding them was exaggerated and they are actually just good friends. The calls to the editors are being supervised by a publicist from her record label Epic and a remorseful Simpson is reportedly expressing her gratitude to the magazines for supporting her career and telling them she would like to take on a more direct role in dealing with them.
A source says executives at Us Weekly, Star and In Touch magazines were happy to speak with Simpson, but People editor LARRY HACKETT hasn’t been as readily available.
According to the source, Hackett is still furious that his magazine was used as a pawn to report Simpson’s non-relationship with Mayer.

ASHTON KUTCHER decided to install a bar in the huge communal closet he shares with wife DEMI MOORE because it takes her so long to get ready for nights out.

"I get more right the more I drink. It’s like I hone in, ‘Those shoes are great! Is that a wood sole, because it’s beautiful!’ It all works out."

Former FRIENDS star MATTHEW PERRY turns on a pornographic tape which parodies his hit TV series when he wants to reminisce about his time on the hit show. The star, who played CHANDLER BING on the hit series, appeared on TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO Wednesday (13SEP06) where he the talk show host asked him if he missed being on the successful show.
He joked, "I certainly miss the people. There’s a Friends porno out there that I watch if I’m ever missing the old gang. It’s called FIENDS.

Reclusive movie star SEAN PENN has agreed to a sit down interview with CNN talk show host LARRY KING to talk frankly about his brother CHRIS’ death.
Actor Chris Penn died in mysterious circumstances, and was later diagnosed with an enlarged heart, in January (06), leaving many to suggest the RESERVOIR DOGS star had been dabbling with drugs.
But, keen to clear up the rumours, Penn spoke about his brother’s passing on a taped segment for LARRY KING TONIGHT.
The Oscar winner says, "The problem was weight… He’d certainly been a fantastically self-abusing guy over periods of his life but that wasn’t the case it the end. It was a natural death." The rare Sean Penn interview, in which he also chats about working with SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS in new film ALL THE KINGS MEN, will air in the US later today (14SEP06).

LATEST: British comic actor CHRIS LANGHAM has appeared in court on charges of nine child sex offences and 15 child porn charges.
The BAFTA award-winning star, from Cranbrook, Kent in England, appeared before magistrates in Sevenoaks, Kent, and was released on conditional bail to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 2 October (06) over the 15 counts of child porn, and on the 6 October over the nine sex offence charges.
On conditions of his bail, he must have no unsupervised access to any person under the age of 16. Langham, 57, was released on unconditional bail in relation to the other 15 charges.

LATEST: CHRISTIE BRINKLEY has filed for divorce from her fourth husband, architect PETER COOK, after 10 years of marriage.
The couple announced they were separating in July (06) after Cook’s affair with his 18-year-old assistant was revealed.
Cook’s attorney NORMAN SHERESKY has confirmed that his client has now been served with a summons, which is the first step in moving forward with a divorce.
Sheresky tells American publication People, "The next step would be for (Brinkley) to serve a complaint and/or for the parties to negotiate an amicable agreement." Sheresky’s business partner, DAVID ARONSON says Cook is distraught over Brinkley’s decision to go ahead with the divorce.
He says, "He was hopeful that they would be able to work through this and continue their marriage.
"He is saddened by the fact that she has decided to move forward, but he understand that’s her right and he will respect that." When asked if Cook hoped to reconcile, Aronson says, "Absolutely. He made no bones about that to her and the few times he’s spoken to the press.
"He hoped they would work through their problems and continue with their life together. He loves his children and family."

The indie supergroup formed to record the theme to SAMUEL L JACKSON’s summer movie flop SNAKES ON A PLANE are set to tour.
Members of trendy underground acts THE SOUNDS, THE ACADEMY IS and MIDTOWN came together to form COBRA STARSHIP and record the movie theme SNAKES ON A PLANE earlier this year (06) - and they enjoyed working together so much, they’re planning to hit the road.
The supergroup, featuring Midtown frontman GABE SAPORTA and The Sounds star MAJA IVARSSON, will join the line-up of MTV2’s upcoming Welcome To The Universe Tour.
And prior to those dates, Cobra Starship will headline the Jerry’s Kids Short Bus Tour ‘06, which begins tonight (14SEP06) in Buffalo, New York.
The indie supergroup will also perform at the Bamboozle Left festival in Pomona, California on 15 October (06).

Singer JOHN MAYER insists fans will go to any lengths to try and capture his attention while he is performing.
The YOUR BODY IS A WONDERLAND singer says he tries to remain focused while he is singing, but claims it’s hard when women are determined to catch his eye.
He explains, "There’s not much you can do when you can’t talk. Women have the sign language of breasts. You can’t ask for the breasts, you just have to give them positive verbal praise when it happens.
"Once you’ve flashed your breasts at me, I can’t ever go out with you because I don’t ever want to tell somebody how we met: ‘Show ‘em! Show ‘em what you mean!’" The singer says some of his more modest fans make banners, but it’s often hard for him to stop long enough to read them while he’s playing.
He adds, "I can’t read the signs and play at the same time, so I have to wait until the middle of the song.

LATEST: Victory Records boss ANTONY BRUMMEL is countersuing pop/punk act HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS for breach of contract and libel.
The Chicago, Illinois group filed suit against their record label earlier this summer (06), claiming Brummel and others came up with "illegal schemes and tactics" served to "line his and Victory’s own pockets" at their expense.
In the suit, Hawthorne Heights demanded the return of master recordings and the cancellation of all copyright agreements and punitive damages, as well as an injunction to prevent Brummel and his company from releasing or distributing their albums and DVDs.
But now Brummel is fighting back and, in his countersuit, he states, "The case filed by the plaintiffs in this action is really about greed, despite the unfounded and spurious laundry list of allegations made concerning Victory Records.
"The plaintiffs are now willing to say anything - no matter how untrue or defamatory - as a strategy designed to free themselves from their legal obligations to the independent record label that made them famous, in favor (sic) of the ‘greener pastures’ and financial inducements offered by so-called ‘major’ record distribution companies." Brummel states that Hawthorne Heights owe his label two more records, according to their contract. He is seeking a cease and desist order against Virgin Records, which is reportedly courting the band.

LATEST: Rockers U2 and GREEN DAY will stage a National Football League (NFL) pre-game performance on the 25 September (06) for the official reopening of the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The show will precede the game between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta, Georgia Falcons, the first event in the Superdome since Hurricane Katrina turned the battered stadium into a makeshift shelter for flood victims.
The bands will play their newly recorded single THE SAINTS ARE COMING, which was originally recorded in 1978 by Scottish punk band THE SKIDS.
The musicians recently teamed up to record a cover of the song and all proceeds are being donated to charity.
U2 guitarist THE EDGE has spearheaded the event and recording on behalf of the Music Rising campaign he co-founded in 2005 to replace musical instruments lost in the Gulf hurricanes.
He says, "The Superdome itself symbolises a rebirth. It was a destroyed building and the scene of horrendous suffering. To see it redeemed is a wonderful sign. "This was the perfect song and the perfect gig."

INXS has been forced to cancel the European dates on their SWITCHED ON world tour because guitarist TIM FARRISS has to undergo knee surgery after tearing ligaments last week (ends03SEP06).
Concerts in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland and Spain have had to be ditched as the axeman recovers.
In a posting on INXS’ website, the Australian rock group’s agent, KEITH NAISBITT, was quoted as saying he would try to reschedule the concerts.
Farriss said of his condition, "The fans out there know how much we were all looking forward to playing across Europe again and I honestly am gutted. "The doc has said enough’s enough though, and has ordered me to undergo surgery in October (06)." Farriss, 49, tore ligaments in his knee last week in Australia.

AMERICAN IDOL season two finalist COREY CLARK has been arrested in Arizona for violating a court order and trespassing at his father-in-law’s residence. Clark was disqualified as a finalist in the second season of the reality TV talent competition after it was revealed he had been arrested in 2002 for assaulting his teenage sister and resisting arrest.
The 26-year-old also caused a stir when he claimed he and Idol judge PAULA ABDUL had an affair during the taping of the show and that she coached him on how to succeed in the competition.
According to Captain EBEN BRATCHER of the Yuma, Arizona police department, "Mr Clark was charged with two misdemeanours, one for criminal trespassing and another for violating a court order." "Mr Clark missed his court hearing and a warrant for his arrest could be coming." Clark was arrested on 23 July (06) where he spent 24 hours in jail before being released on bond.
The court order that Clark violated was issued as a result of a previous domestic violence incident.
Justice of the Peace Pro-Tem YOLANDA TOROK said prosecutors had filed charges of interfering with a judicial proceeding.
Torok said during the brief hearing, "This will be sent back to the county attorney’s office for a warrant to be issued for his appearance."

MADONNA’s debut show in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday night (12SEP06) was guarded by 10,000 soldiers to prevent gatecrashers and protestors from getting into the Luzhniki Stadium.
The LIKE A VIRGIN star sparked fury among religious groups over a dance routine during which she writhed on a cross wearing a crown of thorns.
Promoters also feared up to 200,000 desperate fans - unable to afford the high ticket prices - would cause chaos trying to gain access to the venue.
Audience members had to go through metal detectors and undergo bag checks, while sniffer dogs and helicopters patrolled the grounds.
One fan says, "There was very little atmosphere or dancing and Madonna was really struggling to get the crowd going. Most events have a security presence but this did seem to be extraordinary.
"I was at the G8 summit and the security was comparable. Everywhere you looked there was a ring of security guards. "It did make it hard to dance when you’re standing beside a guy in uniform."

German supermodel CLAUDIA SCHIFFER feels guilty when she’s leaving her children in the care of a nanny - because she thinks she should spend the whole day with them.
Schiffer, who has a three-year-old son, CASPER, and a 22 month-old-daughter, CLEMENTINE, with her British director husband MATTHEW VAUGHN, feels it’s part of her duty as a mother to be there for her children all the time.
She tells German newspaper Die Zeit, "Even if I spend lots of time with the children I always feel guilty when I go to work. I have the feeling inside that I should be with them the whole day." The 36-year-old, who lives with her family in the UK, has fixed times she spends with their kids. She adds, "Even if I have a lot of work this is a sacred time. There will be no phone ringing and no assistant coming in."

MTV star STEVE-O - real name STEPHEN GILCHRIST GLOVER - created the name Steve-O to avoid any connection with Hollywood actor DANNY GLOVER.
The former JACKASS star, notorious for such antics as stapling his scrotum to his thigh, became increasingly annoyed with questions linking him to the LETHAL WEAPON star, even though the latter is black and Steve-O is white.
Glover tells MTV news, "By the age of eight I was frustrated with that stupid joke, ‘Any relation to Danny Glover?’ So I eradicated the last name. "When people ask me what the ‘O’ stands for, it’s very simple. I tell them, ‘It stands for f**king nothing, you idiot!"

Director STEPHEN FREARS has slammed the British monarchy as "idiotic" - but makes an exception for THE QUEEN, who he credits with holding the royal institution together. THE QUEEN movie-maker fears for the future of the royal family once the present ruler departs.
Frears says, "I think the institution is pretty idiotic, but the Queen somehow makes it work.
"There isn’t going to be a revolution, so there is no point in even thinking about it.
"She makes it work and no one else can, or no one else seems able to.
"I imagine there will be changes, I’m sure they would like changes. The idea of living in that sort of world would drive anyone bananas."

Veteran star DUSTIN HOFFMAN, director TIM BURTON and actor FOREST WHITAKER are lined up to appear at this year’s (06) 50th London Film Festival.
The A-listers will hit the red carpet from 18 October (06), with Whitaker’s new film THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND opening the event. But artistic director SANDRA HEBRON still fears the occasion will be dwarfed by international festivals including the Rome Film Festival - which coincides with London’s extravaganza.
And Hebron is concerned that lack of funding may threaten the London Film Festival’s future - even though it routinely attracts star names.
She says, "We lag behind other festivals of similar size and stature. (The festival) operates on a very modest budget compared to its rivals.
"We’ve done a lot of consultation this year and there is a recognition that it has a huge amount of potential, but that more could be done."
