Spanish director DANIEL SANCHEZ AREVALO’s film AZUL OSCURO CASI NEGRO (DARK BLUE ALMOST BLACK) has clinched the prestigious Europa Cinemas Label prize at the Venice Film Festival.
The Label will be awarded to Arevalo tomorrow (09SEP06) - the last day of the Italian festival - for his movie about fate and destiny.
The jury said, "We were all very impressed indeed by the strength of the films selected this year for the Giornate degli Autori. It made our decision very hard, but Azul Oscuro Casi Negro’s highly original screenplay and direction, particularly impressive for a first time director, really struck us.
"It is a subtle and very human comedy, very well played, and achieved with a delightful light touch, which shows great respect for the characters.
"We believe that this film demonstrates the strength of European cinema and has the potential to succeed and captivate audiences not only in cinemas around Europe but also beyond."

LATEST: Angry ROBBIE WILLIAMS fans have prompted an official investigation after the ticket company they used to book to see the star closed down.
Despite paying £100 ($180) each for admission, London firm Harley Street Ticket Brokers not only failed to send tickets, but their phone lines and website are now defunct.
Some of the tickets were for concerts in Leeds, England, this weekend (09-10SEP06).
A spokeswoman for London’s Westminster City Council says they have received a "steady stream of complaints".
She adds, "These complaints, along with being told the company had ceased trading, compelled us to launch an investigation.
"Westminster’s trading standards team are doing everything in their power to get to the bottom of what is going on with this ticket agency."

RUSH HOUR star JACKIE CHAN has had enough of martial arts films and is turning his sights to lighter roles.
The Hong Kong actor, 52, already considers himself a "legend" for lasting so long as a kung fu star and hopes to display other acting talents in different roles, such as the humorous character he plays in new film ROB-B-HOOD.
Chan says, "I’ve been looking to change my roles for quite some time. I’m quite fed up with what I’ve acted so far in movies.
"We all know that the career of an action movie actor is quite short so I already consider myself a legend for still being around today."

Rockers THE SHINS are appealing to fans to help them shoot their next video.
The OH, INVERTED WORLD stars have asked every member of the audience who attends their concert at Austin City Limits Music Festival in Texas, to submit recordings of the set taken on their cameraphones.
The three day festival will take place later this month (15-17SEP06) and is being headlined by TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS, VAN MORRISON and WILLIE NELSON.

LATEST: Police have recovered LINDSAY LOHAN’s stolen handbag in a car park at London’s Heathrow Airport, just metres from where it disappeared.
The MEAN GIRLS star lost her beloved Hermes Birkin bag inside the terminal yesterday afternoon (07SEP06) when it was stolen from her trolley.
The actress/singer was travelling through the airport with boyfriend HARRY MORTON on her way back to America from the Venice Film Festival when she noticed the bag, containing $954,000 (£530,000) worth of jewellery and her asthma medication, was missing.
It is believed the bag was found in a car park at Heathrow by a member of the public, who contacted police.
A police spokeswoman says, "We have not yet established what, if anything, is missing."

Former ‘N SYNC singer JC CHASEZ has lavished praise on JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE for being "brave" enough to experiment with sound.
Chasez was so impressed by his former bandmate’s risque new album FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS he begged Timberlake to co-write and co-produce three songs for his own disc.
Chasez tells MTV, "He has a phenomenal record coming out. Obviously, he’s one of my best friends. But (new single) SEXYBACK is a brand-new sound for him, and it’s opened up a lot of minds.
"The safe route would have been to make another record like the last one, because it was so successful. But I like the fact that he said, ‘No. I’m going to be artistic. I am going to change my sound,’ because that’s what he was inspired to do."

Despite the barrage of criticism the quote attracted, Fergie says, "Being honest is nice. It’s important for people to know where I’ve been so they know where I’m at now. It’s cool to express myself, but I’ve had to learn that doing interviews isn’t completely therapy - spilling everything about yourself isn’t healthy all the time.
"But I’ve been through things that have made me a stronger person, and if I can help some people, I will."

MEAT LOAF begged SCARLETT JOHANSSON to duet with him on his new album BAT OUT OF HELL III, but was snubbed by the sexy star.
The rocker wanted an actress with a singing voice to collaborate with and earmarked the LOST IN TRANSLATION beauty.
He explains, "We were looking for a certain style of voice and I went to Scarlett first. I was looking for an actress and so I went to her and others.
But all the movie stars were off doing movies and the scheduling made it difficult.
"I was looking for an actress because I wanted someone to interpret the song.
Singing is about the lyrics first and foremost then the notes.
"But I don’t know if Scarlett would have done it because it is perhaps not really her style. She has a record coming out and I hear it is very folk-ish." In the end Meat Loaf teamed up with rock singer MARION RAVEN on the LP, which is released next month (OCT06).

The singer has been accused of ignorance of English landmarks because the promo for her debut solo single LONDON BRIDGE features the iconic 19th century Tower Bridge, rather than the plainer London Bridge further down the River Thames.
But the singer, real name STACY FERGUSON, insists, "I knew that".
"I’m not saying it’s about the London Bridge, it’s just a London bridge."

SCISSOR SISTERS frontman JAKE SHEARS has launched a scathing attack on PINK FLOYD legend DAVID GILMOUR, branding him a "b**tard".
Shears was ecstatic when his hero Gilmour invited the singer to appear onstage with him as part of his solo tour in New York City and duet on classic Pink Floyd song COMFORTABLY NUMB, which the Scissor Sisters covered in 2004.
But Shears was left devastated when Gilmour withdrew the offer just hours before he was due on stage.
He fumes, "Earlier this year, David Gilmour told my manager that he wanted me to sing Comfortably Numb with him at Radio City Music Hall for two shows.
"So of course I’m emotionally fragile and weeping - a mess. I was so over the moon because I can sing the hell out of that song - I’ve been singing it for the latter half of my life.
"So I was practising it and doing my vocal exercises to it, but the day before the gig they decided not to have any guests. They canned me. B**tards! It was one of the worst things you can do to anybody. I kind of hate him for it.
"It was like taking candy away from a kid. My mom was getting on a plane to come and see me."

HEATHER MILLS’ ex husband has leaped to the defence of former BEATLE SIR PAUL McCARTNEY, insisting she doesn’t deserve a penny of the singer’s huge fortune.

"I’m not really surprised the marriage is over. Our marriage lasted just under two years - we had been together for five years off and on. But she ran off lots of times.

German muggers ended up in hospital after trying to steal a junior kick-boxer’s mobile phone.
Pauli Borchardt, 17, from Hamburg, was threatened by three boys on his way from school.
They demanded he handed over his mobile phone and as they tried to grab him, Borchardt unleashed his prize-winning karate moves to flatten his attackers.
A passer-by spotted the battered boys and phoned an ambulance.
The three muggers were taken to hospital and treated for cuts and bruises.
One was kept in overnight.
Police initially tried to arrest Borchardt for assault before realising he was acting in self-defence.

Russian men stopping to watch a free strip show failed to realise their cars were being stolen.
Three gorgeous girls have been stripping on a beach and washing each other - and while businessmen ogle the free performance, a gang of car thieves have been driving off in their abandoned luxury vehicles.
Once the cars have been snatched, the girls hastily collect their clothes and escape in a van.
Police searching for the gang said dozens of BMWs and Mercedes have been stolen from the man-made Balashikh beach on the Moscow River.

Russian police helped a man push his car to the side of the road before realising it had been stolen.
Alexei Ashurin had run out of petrol on a Moscow highway during rush-hour and couldn’t believe his luck when police stopped to help push the car to safety.
Officers were about to leave the scene when they noticed the car lock was broken and there was a screwdriver hanging out of the ignition.
After checking the number plate, they realised the car had been reported stolen and the man was wanted for several other thefts.
Ashurin could now face a two-year jail sentence.

Israeli police chasing car thieves ended up reporting another stolen vehicle - their own.
During the high speed chase in Tel Aviv, three thieves crashed into an electricity pole and were force to abandon their stolen car and escape on foot.
Police officers decided they would have a better chance of catching the suspects if they left their car and ran after them.
Two men were arrested, but the third managed to return to the police car and escape.
The car was later found abandoned with the radio smashed.

A teenager fell asleep on a flight from Malta to Bulgaria and woke up to find she was back in Malta.
Maria Ilieva, 17, was travelling alone when she dozed off on an Air Malta flight going from Valletta to Sofia.
Air stewards fail to notice she was still on the plane when the plane took off and by the time she woke up she had returned to Malta.
Her mother Nadezhda Vulova said: "Air Malta officials said the airplane was not a place for sleeping. But I have not seen any signs saying ‘No sleeping’, I have only seen signs saying ‘No smoking’." Maria was reunited with her family four days later and had to pay ?200 for her return flight.
