STONE DEFENDS GRASS
OLIVER STONE has urged people to show tolerance towards controversial German author GUENTER GRASS, insisting he "had to lie" about his membership of the Waffen-SS.
The TIN DRUM author recently revealed the secret he has kept for 60 years, prompting outrage from former Polish President LECH WALESA, who urged him to relinquish his citizenship of Baltic Polish city Gdansk.
He has also been criticised by German Jewish leaders.
But Grass maintains he was drafted into the SS at 17, without a choice - and Stone points out how difficult a position the author was placed in.
He told an audience at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts last night (06SEP06), "We all have to lie. Even Gunter Grass had to lie. We have to be generous."
