COUSTEAU HONOURS CROCODILE HUNTER
Oceanographer PHILIPPE COUSTEAU has paid tribute to CROCODILE HUNTER STEVE IRWIN, who lost his life while the pair were shooting a nature documentary off the coast of Australia.
Cousteau, the grandson of diving legend JACQUES COUSTEAU, had only just met Irwin before joining him on his boat Croc One for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, where they were filming OCEAN’S DEADLIEST for Animal Planet.
But he insists he discovered the essence of the Aussie wildlife hero and what made him great.
In an exclusive interview with CNN talk show host LARRY KING on Tuesday (05SEP06), Cousteau said, "I wrote in an email to some of my colleagues and friends back in the States how amazed I was at how dedicated Steve was and how much he really loved being out there in the wild with those animals.
"The people around him cared for him and loved him… He’s mobbed all the time and he was always gracious and kind. I was struck immediately by that and just by what a remarkable individual he was." The ocean expert attempted to revive Irwin after he was attacked by a stingray and the tragedy reminded him of his father’s freak death in a sea-plane crash in 1997.
Cousteau explains, "That is one of the things that has haunted me a little bit… The circumstances around Steve’s death being such an accident and also my father’s death was such an accident and he left two children… and a widow.
The situation’s so similar. That’s been difficult."
