DOHERTY DRUGS SENTENCE DEFERRED

PETE DOHERTY’s sentencing on drugs charges was today (04SEP06) deferred for three months by London’s Thames Magistrates court, after he impressed the judge with his recovery progress.
Doherty pleaded guilty last month (AUG06) to four charges of possessing class A drugs including heroin and cocaine and one charge of cannabis possession.
The singer was released on bail on condition he check into London clinic The Priory, keeping to a strict night-time curfew.
As a reward for his cooperation, Judge JANE McIVOR decided to allow the singer to continue with his current recovery programme.
She told the BABYSHAMBLES frontman, “It’s turning out to be a long haul.
“I’m impressed with the negative results for heroin and cocaine. It’s stage I never thought you’d reach, (and) the option of re-sentencing you would be counter productive.
“I’m deferring sentencing for three months until December 4, but you have to continue with you rehab and continue your employment, which means cooperation with those who work with you.” Of the decision, Doherty says, “I understand the sentencing. I just want my life back.” The rocker’s lawyer SEAN CURRAN adds, “It’s not a condition of the court he continues in The Priory, but it is a condition that he continues his rehab.”
