PEDRO ALMODOVAR insisted on featuring flatulence in new movie VOLVER - because he finds farting deeply meaningful.
The Spanish director values the earthy side of life, and believes the fragrance of a fart can be an emotional trigger.
He says, "In my own life, my friends do it in front of me.
"It’s an important moment in Volver. It’s when she (PENELOPE CRUZ) is on the toilet that she can smell her mother’s farted, it’s that very personal smell.
"That’s something very emotional for me, because when my mother farted, she used to burst out laughing."

Veteran director WOODY ALLEN adores filming in London, because it forces him to socialise with cast and crew when he is away from his native New York City.
Whenever the film-maker works at home he becomes a recluse, scurrying home whenever he has a break, but friends and family have noticed a marked change in his persona whenever he shoots in the English capital.
Allen’s sister and producer LETTY ARONSON says, "It’s been a liberating experience working in England. Because he’s not in New York, he doesn’t go home for lunch and hangs out with the group more.
"We had SCARLETT JOHANSSON working with us on the first two films and she was very outgoing and friendly.
"And he likes being in London. He hires a house. His wife and kids are here and he likes the restaurants. And the weather."

GREY’S ANATOMY star ELLEN POMPEO insists she owes MADONNA a huge debt of gratitude, because the pop queen made her aware it was "OK" to grieve for her late mother.
Pompeo was just four years old when her mother died of an accidental overdose of painkillers, and her family subsequently chose never to talk about their loss.
But when Pompeo later saw Madonna talking about the death of her own mother, she was inspired by her courage and positive attitude.
And when she recently spotted the RAY OF LIGHT star in the flesh, she was determined to thank her personally.
She says, "She’s the only person I’ve ever approached - she had such an impact on my life as a kid. She lost her mother too and came on MTV when I was 13 saying it was OK to be sad.
"Our family had handled my mother’s death in a traditional, never-speak-of-her-again kind of way. It was only when I heard Madonna that I thought, ‘That’s it. I’ve never really grieved for my mother.’ "She gave me permission to do that and I wanted her to know how much it had helped me. She’s just fantastic."

A new movie about late NIRVANA frontman KURT COBAIN is to be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival next month (SEP06), and the producers insist it will be a rock documentary with a difference.
The film, created by writer MICHAEL AZERRAD and director AJ SCHNACK, is based on 25 hours of interviews with Cobain compiled by Azerrad as he was preparing to write Nirvana biography COME AS YOU ARE.
And the work promises to be an touching portrait of the man behind the persona, featuring audio footage of Cobain speaking more intimately than ever before.
Azerrad says, "We didn’t want to call it a documentary. We’d call it a non-fiction film because it wasn’t really going to trace a journalistic narrative.
"It became more of an intimate visit with a person who a lot of people thought they understood but probably didn’t. You’re listening to him talk in these very intimate conversations, and you get a feeling that I don’t think anyone has ever gotten from Kurt.
"It won’t fit into what anyone is expecting about a Kurt Cobain documentary, and it’s not a traditional rock doc.
"There’s no archival footage in the film, and Kurt only appears at the very end. Basically it’s the chance to sit with his voice and listen to him tell his story." Cobain committed suicide in the garage of his Seattle, Washington home in April 1994.

Pop singer LIONEL RICHIE has confirmed reports his daughter NICOLE is dating reality TV star BRODY JENNER, insisting he delighted with the pairing.
Lionel is an old friend of Jenner’s songwriter mother LINDA THOMPSON and his Olympic runner father BRUCE JENNER, and was even present at the birth of Brody.
The MY DESTINY hitmaker enthuses, “I was there when (Brody) was born. They grew up together.
“To see them together now is like, ‘Where are you going with this?’ But they’re having a wonderful time. He’s a great kid.” Thompson adds, “Nicole is like my godchild. She’s a darling girl, very intelligent and very together. I think they’re very cute (as a couple).

LORD OF THE RINGS film-maker PETER JACKSON has signed to produce a remake of classic British war film THE DAM BUSTERS.
CHRISTIAN RIVERS, who animated Jackson’s last project KING KONG, will direct the film which the Oscar winner insists will be "as authentic as possible and as close to the spirit of the original as possible".
The 1954 movie told the true story of bouncing bombs that were developed by the British army to destroy German dams during World War II. It starred MICHAEL REDGRAVE.
Jackson, who enquired about the rights to the story when he was making initial plans for his Lord Of The Rings movies, could only make the film after MEL GIBSON’s Icon production company pulled out.
He tells film website ScreenDaily, "(My agent) came back and said that Icon had the rights and that Mel Gibson was going to direct and possibly act in it.
"Obviously that didn’t happen." He adds the new film, which will shoot next year with a $30-40 million (£16 -£21 million) budget, will reveal much more about the missions than the original.
Jackson says, "So much of it was still secret. They weren’t even allowed to show the bomb itself and had to create a fictionalised bomb."

British broadcaster Channel 4 is set to premiere a controversial new drama detailing a fictional assassination of US President GEORGE W BUSH at the Toronto Film Festival next month (SEP06).
DEATH OF A PRESIDENT is filmed in the style of a real-life documentary, using a blend of computer generated special effects and archive-type footage to show Bush arriving at an anti-war rally in Chicago, Illinois in 2007.
In the programme, which will be broadcast on the UK digital channel More4 in October (06), Bush is killed by a sniper and the ensuing investigation leads to a Syrian-born suspect.
More4 boss PETER DALE says, "It’s a pointed political examination of what the war on terror is doing to the American body politic.
"I’m sure there will be people upset by it. I hope people will see the intention as a good one."

Former FRIENDS star JENNIFER ANISTON is reportedly set to sign a multi-million dollar deal with sports giant Nike.
The Hollywood beauty, 37, is in talks with the firm over an international campaign, which will include a coveted advertising spot during the televised American football final Super Bowl in February (07).
According to internet reports, Aniston will donate a large proportion of her fee to cancer charities.
Aniston is a keen runner and regularly appears in tabloid magazines jogging around her Malibu, California, home.
Earlier this week (ends01SEP06), rapper EMINEM announced he was designing limited-edition trainers for Nike, with proceeds of the sales going toward charities in his native Michigan.

The handset - the first to be associated with an artist or any other brand will be available in the UK in October (06), and will feature a collection of her music promos, footage of her UK album showcase, an exclusive interview and a brand new unreleased track.
Zomba’s senior Vice-President JOHN FLECKENSTEIN says, "Our hope is that the new people who buy PSP will discover her through the free content we’re offering.

Sexy THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS star KIMBERLY WYATT is struggling to complete the group’s current tour because she’s black and blue with bruises.
The 24-year-old blonde admits it’s difficult to cope with the gruelling choreography and bizarre props in the show, and recently slipped up.
She tells Celebrity Week, "We have this contraption that we use and it has a bunch of stingers and it is very industrial looking and there is a part in the show where we do something on where The Dolls came from. It is very sexy.
"I am walking down the stairs, trying to look cute and all of a sudden, I don’t know what happened, I missed a stair, I flew down the stairs and landed on my bum.
"I made it look like nothing happened, but I sure felt my face beet red. I had bruises for weeks. It’s a live show, that’s what happens." The US dates come to an end next month (07SEP06) at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

PRIMAL SCREAM are performing for free in London tonight (31AUG06) in the first of a series of rock concerts staged by online networking phenomenon MySpace.
Users of the site - who previously signed on to a ‘Secret Shows’ page scrambled for tickets at Tottenham Court Road record shop Fop this morning in a bid to see the rockers at the capital’s legendary 100 Club.
And the website are already organising more free shows, featuring the likes of newcomer LILY ALLEN, who famously garnered her initial fanbase through MySpace, RAZORLIGHT, RICHARD ASHCROFT and MORRISSEY.
A MySpace spokesman says, "It shows our support for new music and to get music out there for free to more people."

STEVIE WONDER has lent his support to hurricane-stricken New Orleans, Louisiana, at a star-studded concert to mark the first anniversary of the disaster.
The singer was joined by blues singer DR JOHN, Grammy award-winning gospel performer YOLANDA ADAMS and jazz trumpeter WYNTON MARSALIS, whose trust to rebuild the cultural infrastructure of the city was supported by the Tuesday (29AUG06) gig.
Despite the strong line-up, organisers admit the turn-out was disappointing.
The original plan to have 10,000 seats was reduced to just 6,000.
EARTH, WIND AND FIRE were originally scheduled to play at the benefit, but pulled out citing other commitments.
At least 1,836 people were killed when Hurricane Katrina lashed the US gulf coast on 29 August 2005.

The former banjo player of British 1970s band MUNGO JERRY has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend and a pub landlord in Cornwall, South West England. PAUL KING pleaded not guilty at Bodmin Magistrates on Tuesday (29AUG06) to two charges of assault by beating of former lover FIONA SWEET and pub landlord JOHNNIE PUSEY on 4 July (06).
The 58-year-old was released on unconditional bail, but will return in court again on 3 October (06) for a pre-trial review IN THE SUMMERTIME was a number one hit for Mungo Jerry in 1970.

HAUNTED HOUSE hitmaker JUMPIN’ GENE SIMMONS has died in Mississippi after suffering a long illness. He was 69.
The rockabilly singer/songwriter worked with a huge range of stars including ELVIS PRESLEY, as a support act, and country superstar TIM McGRAW, as a writer, in his 50-year career.
He died on Tuesday (29AUG06) at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Simmons is best remembered for 1964 hit HAUNTED HOUSE. The novelty track reached number 11 on the Billboard pop chart and spawned a world tour.
More recently (94), he co-wrote INDIAN OUTLAW for McGraw.
Simmons is survived by his son, mother, a sister, and two brothers.

Plans to celebrate late QUEEN frontman FREDDIE MERCURY’s 60th birthday in his birth country Zanzibar could be axed over protests from a Muslim group.
The homosexual rocker has been branded an insult to the Islamic island for his outrageous lifestyle before dying of AIDS in 1991.
A huge beach party was being planned at a waterfront restaurant for Saturday (02SEP06), but the project has been thrown into doubt after a barrage of complaints from Zanzibar’s Association for Islamic Mobilization and Propagation.
However, the venue’s manager SIMAI MOHAMMED has vowed to do whatever he can to keep the party on track, insisting, "Our main idea is to promote tourism and Freddie Mercury was from Zanzibar. It’s part of our history.
"We are all Muslims and it’s not our intention to offend any religion." Zanzibar’s government has already advised state-owned media not to report on Mercury’s birthday for fear of flaming tensions between the religious group and the restaurant.
