OLIVIER WIDOW DENIES AFFAIR
SIR LAURENCE OLIVIER’s widow DAME JOAN PLOWRIGHT insists she did not begin her relationship with the legendary actor while he was married to actress VIVIEN LEIGH.
Plowright met and fell in love with Olivier in the early 1960s when he and Leigh were on the point of breaking up. But she decided they should stay apart until Olivier and Leigh had properly separated.
Plowright says, "We waited. She changed her mind rather a lot, which was difficult. She would agree to a divorce one day and then change her mind the next.
"That is when I said, ‘Yes, we will have a year apart. If the love is deep enough it will last and we will be together and if it isn’t, it won’t.’ But it would be put to the test."
