PACEMAKER FOR FORMER PRESIDENT FORD
LATEST: Former US President GERALD FORD is enjoying the benefits of a cardiac pacemaker after being hospitalised with “shortness of breath” last week (15AUG06).
The 93-year-old is resting “comfortably” after the operation to improve his heart’s performance at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Ford’s assistant, PENNY CIRCLE, said in a statement, “Former President Gerald R Ford has completed an evaluation and series of tests resulting in the implantation of a cardiac pacemaker.
“The procedure this afternoon went smoothly and without incident.
“(He) is resting comfortably with his wife and children and is expected to continue his recuperation at Mayo Clinic for the next several days.” Republican Ford took office in 1974, when RICHARD NIXON resigned after the Watergate scandal, and was succeeded by Democrat JIMMY CARTER in 1976. He is the oldest living former US president.
