www.macysinc.com - Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M) today announced that Daniel H. Edelman, currently president and chief operating officer of San Francisco-based Macy's West, has been appointed to the new corporate-level position of president for international retail development. Robert B. Harrison, previously president and chief operating officer of Macy's Northwest in Seattle, will succeed Edelman as president and chief
operating officer of the Macy's West division. Both appointments are effective immediately.
In his new role, Edelman will be responsible for researching and analyzing opportunities for international expansion of the Macy's and Bloomingdale's brands. He will remain based in San Francisco and report to Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Harrison has led the transition as Macy's Northwest was consolidated into Macy's West this spring. He will relocate to San Francisco to join Jeff Gennette, chairman and chief executive officer, and Rudolph J. Borneo, vice chairman and director of stores, as part of the Macy's West senior management team. Harrison will report to Gennette. Macy's West, with 258 stores in 13 states and Guam, reports to Macy's, Inc. Vice Chair Susan D. Kronick.
"Dan Edelman and R.B. Harrison are moving to new roles that will leverage their experience as senior leaders within our company," Lundgren said. "Dan Edelman, a career Macy's executive, will help us to explore ways to expand our brands internationally. Macy's and Bloomingdale's already are known around the world as fashion leaders, and we believe that selective expansion internationally will provide additional opportunities for top-line growth in the years ahead. While accelerating same-store sales growth profitably remains our #1 objective, we must look ahead to the future and prepare for longer-term initiatives such as international expansion. With Dan, we are moving one of our most senior operating principals to this new assignment so that our due diligence process is thorough and our international strategies are consistent with our brand strategies."
"At Macy's West, R.B. Harrison will be the operating principal at the newly expanded division spanning a broad geography in the American west with many opportunities to enhance our offering in each store through new initiatives for localization and tailoring merchandise assortments, as well as for improving the shopping experience," Kronick said. "Given his previous assignments at divisions in Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, R.B. has hands-on experience and keen insight into customers in markets that present considerable growth opportunities for Macy's West."
Edelman, 59, has served as president and chief operating officer of Macy's West since February 2006. Previously, he had been chairman and chief executive officer of Macy's Northwest since March 1998 and president of the division since February 1997. Prior to that, he spent six years as vice chairman for finance and operations at Macy's West. A native of New York, he began his career in 1976 as an assistant accounting manager with Macy's in Manhattan. A graduate of Temple University with an MBA from Long Island University, Edelman and his wife, Kay, live in San Francisco.
Harrison, 45, became president and chief operating officer of Macy's Northwest in February 2006 following Macy's, Inc.'s acquisition of The May Department Stores Company. Previously, he had been chairman of Robinsons-May since October 2004, having served as the division's senior vice president and chief financial officer since June 2002, as well as the senior vice president for finance of the Meier & Frank division before it was merged with Robinsons-May. A native of Pittsburgh, Harrison began his career at the Kaufmann's division in 1986 as an accounting analyst and served in positions of increasing responsibility before becoming vice president and controller of Kaufmann's.
