2013-10-30 16:24:49 - Eccotopia has announced that it has been asked to supply fast-growing Megafolia trees as part of a reforestation campaign.
Julian Moses, Chief Executive Officer at sustainable forestation company Eccotopia, Ltd. has announced that the company has been approached to supply an as yet undisclosed number of its fast-growing Megafolia© trees to the Tanzanian government which has launched a reforestation campaign to combat widespread and sustained tree-felling in parts of the country in order to facilitate intensive tobacco farming.
The campaign, which began earlier this month, is targeting more than 15 villages in affected areas where the majority of the residents are employed by tobacco farming enterprises.
Mr. Moses said, “This is more good news for Eccotopia and further cements our position as a reliable supplier of sustainable forestation on the African continent. We are proud to do our part in
what is a laudable effort by both the Tanzanian government and the local tobacco industry to demonstrate that big business and the environment can, indeed, co-exist to the benefit of all concerned”.
The Megafolia© Tree, sometimes referred to as a “super specimen”, is a specific cross-polination hybrid of five other trees. The result is a rapidly growing hardwood tree that grows in almost any environment. Megafolia© trees have been successfully used to remove contaminants from soil and, through the process of photosynthesis, are able to convert the contaminants to oxygen and other harmless products.
The Megafolia© saplings will be supplied to the order of the Tanzanian government over the course of the next 12 months. It is, however, likely that given the extent of the development of the tobacco farming activities in the country, the conservation effort will require Megafolia trees to be supplied over an extended period.
“It’s understandable that farmers need to make a living but it is most gratifying to know that the Tanzanian officials on the ground are paying mind to the environmental impact of intense farming practices,” concluded Mr. Moses.
