Summary: Easyjet will now carry passengers from London Luton to Reykjavik in 2012.
Iceland is set to join the ranks of the most desirable travel destinations ( bridge-cities.com/category/travel-destinations/) once again in 2012. EasyJet have just announced a new route between London Luton and Reykjavik which will be operational from March 27. The Luton-Reykjavik connection will be running all year round.
In keeping with Easyjet’s reputation, the air fares come in on a budget. Tickets are available from £32.99 for a one way ticket and £58.81 for a return. The breaks are aimed at those seeking an unusual city break and those flying into Reyjkjavik for business trips.
2012 is touted as a special year to see the Icelandic aurora borealis. Scientists predict that the winter light display will be visible at an
intensity not seen for 50 years, with some estimates saying that the lights will be visible as far south as Rome. The event is said to be caused by the Solar Maximum, a period when the magnetic field on the sun’s equator rotates at a slightly faster pace than at the solar poles. October to April is said to be the best time to observe the lights.
Iceland is focused on catering to a diverse tourist crowd. The Arctic Open International Golf Tournament is taking place as normal in Akureyri, just south of the Arctic Circle. The tournament boasts an unusual midnight tee-off, with a unique opportunity to play in bright arctic daylight. Airport transfers and hospitality are included in many packages.
National Geographic and Lonely Planet are among the respected travel guides placing Iceland near the top of their lists for the 2011-2012 travel season. National Geographic have cited the Blue Lagoon location in particular, calling it an “otherworldly vision”. Capital city Reykjavik is expected to continue to draw the crowds given the affordability of the location and its popularity with a young cultural crowd. Roughly 566,000 tourists visited Iceland in 2011, most opting to stay in Reykjavik.
