Santa Monica, CA, September 11, 2008 - Enginuity, a company that produces RainReserve (www.rainreseve.com), a fully sustainable rain preservation solution, today announced its availability at the American Rainwater Catchment System Association (ARCSA) conference in Santa Monica from September 16-18. The easy-to-install and -maintain rain diverter works in tandem with rain barrels by attaching to virtually any existing downspout. RainReserve diverts
the flow of rainwater from the gutter system into a rain barrel, resulting in naturally soft rainwater that is readily available to water gardens, trees, houseplants or for any other non-potable use. RainReserve helps to create an environmentally conscious and responsible society by providing a path to conserve water, while utilizing green materials such as bio-plastics, recycled metals, plastics and papers.
In June of 2008, following the driest spring in 88 years, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a statewide drought spurred by two years of below-average rainfall, with the state's snowpack water content only 67 percent of average. (
gov.ca.gov) Resources are stretched thin by drastic climate change and constant population growth, and throughout the state, municipalities and districts are considering or already instituting tactics such as recycling, rationing and implementing higher fees for excessive use. In response to the statewide drought, U.S.-based startup, Enginuity, will work with California to modernize the art of rainwater harvesting.
At ARCSA, Enginuity will demonstrate the intuitiveness and practicality of RainReserve to the city of Santa Monica, which currently imports 90 percent of its water supply from Northern California and the Colorado River. Santa Monica has targeted a 20 percent reduction in commercial and residential water use by 2010 and offers a $100 rebate (www.smgov.net) for installing a rain barrel system. The cost of a single RainReserve kit starts at $89.95 and can be used with any sealed barrel or tank, making the solution efficient and affordable. RainReserve effectively captures storm water runoff, which is considered the number one source of pollution to Santa Monica Bay.
Ryan Furukawa, strategic director of Enginuity, says, 'An average sized home in Santa Monica can capture 7,200 gallons of water annually. RainReserve is a logical solution for residents concerned with preserving rain water. We aim to present the city of Santa Monica and its residents with a simple solution that saves water, resources and ultimately money.'
Additionally, The Santa Monica Urban Runoff Recycling Facility (SMURRF) is the first of its kind in the nation, treating up to 500,000 gallons of storm water runoff a day with advanced filtration technologies, primarily to be reused for landscape irrigation.
