Speaking about the event, Mr. Ajay Shriram, Chairman and Sr. Managing Director and Mr Vikram Shriram, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd (DSCL) said, “DSCL believes in providing encouragement to young promising tennis players and giving them an opportunity to exhibit their prowess in the game of tennis to help them reacha greater stature. We believe that Fenesta Open Tennis Championship will continue to provide a launch pad for talented players to excel in tennis and thus help India emerge prominently in the International tennis scenario”
They added, “We have been organizing National Hardcourt Tennis Championship every year since 1998 under the aegis of the prestigious All India Tennis Association. We have been encouraged by the enthusiastic participation in the tournament which is steadily increasing year on year across the country. With the support and assistance of AITA and DLTA we shall continue to provide this opportunity to the young tennis playing talent of our country and create an even bigger pool of tennis enthusiasts.”
Over the years, the tournament has seen some of India’s most promising talent take to the courts at the prestigious DLTA. Some of the prominent names among these are Mens ; J. Vishnu Vardhan, RohanBopanna, SomdevDevvarman, JeevanNeduncheziyan, Nitin Kirtane, Yuki Bhambri, Women’s: Sania Mirza, SaiJayalakshmi, RushmiChakravarty, SonalPhadke, PrernaBhambri, RadhikaTulpule,RutujaBhosale, Lisa Pereira, Isha Lakhani and Ankita&SanaaBhambri among others and promises to feature many more upcoming tennis stars in the future.
The 2012 edition – the second Fenesta Open Tennis Championship – saw the emergence of the future custodians of the Indian tennis domain. JeevanNedunchezhiyan, PrernaBhambri, Arjun Kadhe and RishikaSunkara showed some exceptional court skills in the championship and these players are now being widely recognized as superstars of tennis.
This tournament has total prize money of about Rs. 8.84 Lac which is the highest in any domestic championship.It is the only single full group Nationals i.e. the format covers Men, Ladies, Boys and Girls - Under 18, Under 16 and Under 14.
The qualifying draw is restricted to 64 in all the categories except the Junior Girls ( Under 18, Under 16 and Under 14) where is the qualifying draw is restricted to 32 as per the rules intimated by the All India Tennis Association.
