2013-10-07 20:00:14 - Facing the Dental Crisis with Project Smile
Nashville, TN – (October 7, 2013), Dr. Misee Harris has combined her expertise in Pediatric Dentistry and work in Advocacy by founding Project Smile, an organization where she is currently tackling our national dental crisis and traveling to under-served communities worldwide providing children with urgent dental care. Dr. Harris provides "FREE" dental care for children in Tennessee and overseas! When traveling throughout the USA, she provides "FREE" preventative work and educational needs.
"Sadly, by the time I see many of these children, their dental disease is so rampant that I must have the patient placed under general anesthesia to perform full mouth dental rehabilitation. This anesthesia is the same type that is used during major surgeries and again puts the
child at risk. Other children often need to be sedated in order for me to complete dental work," Dr. Misee Harris stated.
One in four children has untreated tooth decay, now the most common chronic illness among school-aged children. Tooth pain and infection is now rated as the number one cause of children missing school days. Low-income families and racial and ethnic minorities tend to be disproportionately affected because they tend to lack access to care. More than half of the pediatric dentist in the country no longer participates in the Medicaid program. In the long term no dental care can mean heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Less than 40% of the children who are enrolled in Medicaid seek dental services
• Identify communities nationwide that have low access to dental care.
• Increase public awareness of oral health care disparities and create an understanding of the determinants of proper home oral hygiene techniques.
• Provide dental examinations, preventative dental sealants, and comprehensive dental care to help children ages 4-18 and promote quality of life, healthy development, healthy eating habits and healthy living habits in children who are from low income and rural areas.
The comprehensive initiative includes creating funding projects to assist Dr. Misee Harris’s travel to under-served and rural communities in an effort of creating access to dental care for children across the USA.
