- NERA Economic Consulting, a leading global provider of economic advice and analysis in business, legal, and regulatory matters, announced today that Dr. Henry Butler has joined the firm as a Special Consultant.
Dr. Butler currently serves as the Executive Director of the Searle Center on Law, Regulation, and Economic Growth at Northwestern University School of Law. Under his
leadership, the Searle Center funds research and holds a number of conferences each year to bring together leading scholars, practitioners, and judges for in-depth discussions of topics ranging from cost-benefit analyses of regulations to tort reform to the ongoing impact of the Microsoft antitrust decision.
"Henry's long-standing interest in the role of economics in law and policy, with a particular concern that sound economics prevails in the courtroom, makes him a tremendous addition to NERA's roster of experts," says NERA President Dr. Andrew Carron. "NERA is pleased to welcome him to the firm."
Over the last 14 years, Dr. Bulter has run the Judicial Education Program, which offers programs to educate federal and state judges about the principles of economics, finance, accounting, and statistics. He has periodically testified as an expert witness on a variety of matters, often to offer rebuttal testimony as to whether economic methodologies have been relied upon in an inappropriate or inconsistent manner. These cases involved intellectual property antitrust counterclaims, damages from breach of contract, antitrust (e.g., conspiracy, bid-rigging, and not-for-profit conversion), and class certification issues.
In addition to several books, he has published in leading economic journals and many major law reviews. At Northwestern, Dr. Butler teaches Corporation, Insurance, and Antitrust Aspects of Intellectual Property. Dr. Butler holds a PhD in economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a JD from the University of Miami School of Law.
