UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The tiny port nation of Djibouti has warned the U.N. Security Council that Eritrea has launched a major military buildup on their shared border.
The country says the border overlooks strategic Red Sea shipping lanes that could lead to confrontation.
Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf is accusing Eritrea of carrying out «an undisguised
and naked provocation» against his country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He urged the Security Council in a letter circulated Tuesday «to deploy urgently all necessary measures» to prevent another conflict in the Horn of Africa region.
Djibouti is a key U.S. ally in the Horn of Africa and more than 1,200 U.S troops are stationed there. France also has a base in Djibouti, its former colony.
