Do you have a back-up plan in the event of an IT disaster? IT experts, Digital Craftsmen, have found that, shockingly, half of companies don’t.
As business managers return from their holidays it is a good time to review IT systems and ensure that they’re not taking any unnecessary risks that could destroy the company.
Despite the UK’s position as the ‘most-internet based economy’ (Boston Consulting Group) in the G20, over half of UK SMEs have no disaster recovery plan in place to protect their business against data loss, network outage and other IT disasters. Of the SMEs who do have systems in place, 83% admit their preparations are ‘less than excellent’. 43% of businesses fail to reopen after suffering
severe data loss and, as British businesses continue to increase their dependence on IT, they’re becoming even more vulnerable to new threats.
Simon Wilcox, MD of Digital Craftsmen, stresses the importance of being prepared for the worst; “IT disaster recovery plans are just as necessary as having business insurance and fire alarms to the survival of any modern business. Having no disaster recovery plan is taking a huge, unnecessary risk. ”
One of the principal requirements of any disaster recovery plan is to ensure all IT is regularly backed up remotely. Organisations should determine their back-up requirements by considering how much data (in terms of hours taken to compile) can be lost without too much of a detrimental effect on the business, as well as the maximum time acceptable between the failure and return to normal operations.
Digital Craftsmen specialise in ensuring the digital protection of businesses. They back up data daily to guarantee firms’ data can be restored within 24 hours of a crisis. Simon Wilcox concludes; “All our disaster recovery plans are bespoke, tailored to meet each client’s needs depending on the size and business requirements. All clients benefit from our Essentials disaster recovery plan as a standard because we know how critical it can be to a small business’ survival.”
