Two Cypriot students on the Fine Art master’s course at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, UK, are exhibiting their degree work this week.

Avgousta Demosthenous and Antonia Hadjicosta, who both studied for a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at DMU before completing the master’s, will be showcasing their figurative paintings inspired by their culture at the university’s MA Fine Art Show.

Both Avgousta and Antonia are originally from Nicosia, Cyprus, and will be graduating from the MA Fine Art degree in November 2010.

Avgousta, 21, created oil canvas paintings entitled Frame of Mind as part of her final year project.

Commenting on her work, Avgousta said: “The subject of my work this year refers to landscapes. I am not attempting a realistic representation

of a place or a scene in my paintings; I am working based on the atmospheric element and mood of a landscape, considering the colour and the emotions provoked.

“Since I cannot avoid the personal connection and influence in my paintings, my work is moved by my emotions and impressions and I think this is what makes my work personal and unique. Furthermore, I give my own personal interpretation of the work and technique of other artists, combining their take on moods and colours, creating a different approach to an already established artistic movement.”

Antonia, whose oil paintings are entitled Disintegrative Emotions, focused specifically on the feelings derived from catastrophic events to inspire her work.

The 23-year-old student said: “Through figurative painting, I wanted to bring forward the emotions drawn from catastrophic events, and have used a vivid palette of colourations to create a contrast between the subject and the painting.”

The degree show runs from Friday 3 to Wednesday 8 September 2010 at DMU’s Fletcher Building, Leicester, UK.

Art on show will include sculptures, drawings, paintings, 3D objects, film and installations by 21 students. For further information and to see images of some of the exhibits, go online to: www.dmu.ac.uk/subsites/aadgallery/index.php?image=192&exhibi .. :
