2013-04-04 11:34:49 - Crown Trade’s annual search for the nation’s most talented trainee and apprentice decorators is now under way, for the 35th year in succession.
And they’re off!
All the contenders for the title of Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year 2013 are now in preparation for their regional competition heats which take place at colleges and other training venues across the UK between mid-April and the end of June.
Sixteen one-day contests will be held in total, during which competitors, encouraged by their tutors, supervisors and employers, will strive to impress the judges with their skills, techniques and professionalism. There are two levels of entry, and all those taking part in the main event will have an opportunity to win a place at the national SkillBuild final where they could win a unique trophy and a cheque from Crown Trade for £1,000 or
one of the runner up prizes of £500 and £250.

Students in their first year at college who are not ready for the challenge of the main competition will be participating at the New Entrant level. This does not lead to a national final but gives entrants the chance to experience the atmosphere of a skills competition without the associated stress, and return to compete in the main event in future years.
This year, for the very first time, the national SkillBuild final will take place from 14-16 November 2013 at the NEC Birmingham as part of The Skills Show, a massive vocational skills and training event organised by WorldSkills UK attracting over 100,000 spectators.
Because Crown Paints’ annual skills event is organised in association with SkillBuild and WorldSkills, it offers Britain’s most talented young decorators an exclusive stepping stone into the exciting international competition arena. Participants who show exceptional promise during the event and who meet certain age criteria may be invited to try for selection for the UK team at WorldSkills 2015, the ultimate global skills event for young trainees and apprentices.
Crown Trade Senior Brand Manager Debbie Orr says: “We’re delighted that the final of our competition will be an integral part of this year’s Skills Show at the NEC and that our top competitors will be competing alongside their peers from around fifty different skill sectors. This gives us a great opportunity to inspire tens of thousands of young people visiting the show to think about a future career in painting and decorating and to point them towards the many different colleges and other training providers exhibiting at the show who offer recognised P&D courses.”
