Event background:
Nominees for the 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards were announced on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
The Critics' Choice Awards are bestowed annually by the Broadcast Film Critics Association to honor the finest in cinematic achievement. Nominees are selected by written ballots in a week-long voting period, and are announced in December. The winners are revealed at the annual Critics' Choice Awards ceremony in January. The awards are currently broadcast live on the VH1 television network. The 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Awards were at the Santa
Monica Civic Auditorium, the 2010 event, renamed The Critics' Choice Movie Awards, was held at the refurbished historic Hollywood Palladium on January 15, 2010. Special awards are given out at the discretion of the BFCA Board of Directors.
The Broadcast Film Critics Association prides itself on its ability to anticipate Academy Award nominations: between 1997 and 2004, the Critics' Choice nominations predicted all but two of 35 Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. By comparison, the Golden Globe Awards were three times more likely to differ during the same period. However, the fact that the BFCA, which typically nominates nine or ten films for Best Film, chooses more than the five nominations of the Academy Awards and Golden Globes may account for some of this greater predictive power.
