3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS), today announced it has won a tender to upgrade the network backbone for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to Gigabit Ethernet technology using 3Com’s H3C® enterprise solutions portfolio.

After a thorough evaluation of the features, functionality, service and support levels, as well as cost of comparable products from competitors, the Ministry decided that 3Com’s H3C enterprise core and edge network infrastructure solutions were proven, secure and provided the best value for performance. Another differentiating factor was H3C’s Intelligent Network Management (IMC) solution with network traffic analysis that enables greater visibility, control and automation of the network.

“The price-performance advantage of 3Com’s H3C enterprise solutions provides the Ministry with exceptional business value especially during

this rough economic wave. In addition, 3Com Malaysia’s track record among government and related agencies gave the Ministry high confidence in 3Com for its network upgrading project,” said Marcus Lai, Country Manager, 3Com Malaysia.

With the enhanced H3C network, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will boost the speed, reliability and security of its network to enhance communications both internally and externally with its foreign counterparts.

The deployment of the 3Com H3C solutions will also help the Ministry reduce both its capital expenses (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) in maintenance support for both its Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) compared with equivalent solutions on the market.

The 3Com networking products deployed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs include.

- H3C S7500E series — core multi-service routing platform;
- H3C S5500-EI series — data centre switches for edge, distribution and core applications with Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) that can virtualise multiple switches into one logical switch to improve resilience, flexibility and manageability;
- H3C Intelligent Management Center (IMC) — a fully integrated unified end-to-end management platform for large scale networks; and
- 3Com Switch 4200G — managed Gigabit switch for edge and workgroup applications;
- TippingPoint Network Access Control (NAC) — multiple enforcement methods for greater control over network access and usage, reducing network vulnerabilities while improving policy and regulatory compliance.
