Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba has expressed concern over the latest rescues of Colombian hostages by the army.
VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue reports:
Speaking to Telesur channel, the Senator said such military operations endanger the lives of hostages.
The operation that freed three soldiers last Sunday was a success but what the incident did highlight, she said, was that there IS a war raging in Colombia.
Such dangerous military incursions, she insisted, should not take the place of negotiated freedoms.
Leading presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos declared that if he is elected President, then he will stop the exchange of hostages for prisoners with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and would avail of military operations.
The Colombians would appear to be taking a page out of the successful military end of the civil war in Sri Lanka.
The UK
Economist has published an article on the so-called Sri Lanka option, saying countries with similar internal problems are willing to follow.
The option is said to be based on a scorched earth tactics, zero negotiations or ceasefires, ignoring difference between combatants and non-combatants and dismissal of international and media concerns.
Santos is definitely opting for a military solution to the 50 year old civil war with a lot of technological aid from the US military.
