OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/01/10 -- The president of the Canadian Labour Congress is using Labour Day celebrations to continue the push for improvements to the Canada and Quebec Pension Plans.



"Most Canadians can't save enough to live with dignity in retirement," says Ken Georgetti. "The labour movement along with retiree and community groups is calling for a gradual doubling of future CPP benefits. A modest increase in contributions will produce thousands of dollars a year in extra benefits for workers when they retire."





The labour movement has spent the past year promoting improvements to the CPP and Georgetti says that effort is paying off. " A majority of the country's finance ministers now agree that the best way to help Canadians save more for retirement is through the CPP, and mayors and municipal councillors have also called for improvements to the CPP. There is no longer any excuse for delay. Let's get the job done."



Canadian workers have celebrated their achievements on Labour Day ever since it was declared a national holiday in 1894.
