PLANO, Texas – Feb. 8, 2013 – Cirro Energy, a subsidiary of Dominion Resources, has announced that CSTEM Teacher and Student Support Services in Houston will receive $5,000 on behalf of Dr. Robert L. Satcher, Jr. from the Dominion Foundation. Dr. Satcher, a surgical oncologist at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center and the first orthopedic surgeon in space, was honored on Wednesday, Jan. 30, during the 2013 Dominion and Library of Virginia’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History. As part of the program, the Dominion Foundation made a $5,000 donation to each of the award recipient’s charity of choice.

CSTEM engages Pre-K through 12th grade students in hands-on, project-based learning experiences. The goal is to expose them to workforce

opportunities in related areas of communications, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“Dominion and Cirro Energy have long invested in the communities we serve by supporting key organizations like Houston’s CSTEM Teacher and Student Support Services,” said Cindi Wakefield, spokesperson for Cirro Energy. “The donation made on behalf of Dr. Satcher will allow CSTEM to continue helping Houston area youth prepare for success in life.”

Dr. Satcher was among eight honored by Dominion Virginia Power and the Library of Virginia’s inaugural Strong Men & Women in Virginia History program. It is designed to celebrate African American men and women whose accomplishments and determination demonstrate true excellence in leadership. During the Jan. 30 gala, the Honorable Laura Fornash, Secretary of Education, spoke and assisted Dr. Sandra Treadway, Librarian of the Library of Virginia, with the presentation of awards to four student essay winners.

Robert Lee Satcher Jr. earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from M.I.T. and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He spent much of his career treating adult and child bone cancer. With extensive experience researching, teaching and practicing throughout the United States, he has embarked on mission trips to many foreign countries, including Gabon, Nicaragua, Nigeria and Venezuela.

Selected as an astronaut by NASA, he was aboard the space shuttle Atlantis for almost eleven days in 2009. Dr. Satcher spent more than 259 hours in space, trekked 4.5 million miles in 171 orbits above the Earth; he also took two separate spacewalks outside the shuttle. He left NASA in 2011 and is now a surgical oncologist in Houston.

“Dr. Satcher is a hero and a role model for us all,” added Wakefield. “His dedication to helping Texas children grow into productive young adults is truly admirable. The CSTEM donation made at his direction will help the organization reach even more kids.”
