VINA DEL MAR, Chile (AP) - Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara booked a place in the Copa Libertadores last 16 with a 1-1 draw away against Everton on Wednesday.
Javier Hernandez gave Chivas the lead after six minutes before Jaime Riveros equalized two minutes after halftime.
Chivas needed at least a draw to progress from Group 6 and held on for the point despite intense Everton pressure in the second half. Everton needed to win to jump over Chivas.
Chivas qualified with 9 points, one behind group winner Caracas of Venezuela, and a point ahead of Everton. Caracas drew 1-1 with last-placed Lanus of Argentina.
Chivas took an early lead when Hernandez sprung the offside trap and clipped the ball past Gustavo Dalsasso in the Everton goal.
The Mexican club controlled the first half with a solid defensive display and Everton was restricted to long-range efforts.
After eight minutes, Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel dived to push away a shot by Cristian Uribe and had to be alert again a few minutes later to block a deflected free kick from Riveros.
Riveros' ability from setpieces got the Chilean club back on level terms when his dipping free kick just after halftime left Michel stranded.
Everton took the initiative and Ezequiel Miralles hooked a good chance just over the bar in the 61st.

Chivas striker Alberto Medina should have put Chivas back in front after breaking through the Everton defense in the 68th but Dalsasso blocked.
Miralles hit the crossbar with Everton's last chance in the 85th.
In the final minutes, Chivas midfielder Gonzalo Pineda and Miralles were sent off after a scuffle in the Guadalajara box.
