2009-07-06 20:38:35 - The California Department of Boating and Waterways has teamed up with nontraditional advertising company, BBI Display Systems, to promote responsible boating initiatives. A floating billboard message will be appearing in popular Southern California boater locations throughout the summer.

A special public service announcement (PSA) will be running in the Marina del Rey this summer to promote responsible boating and reducing water pollution. The CA Department of Boating of Waterways (CA DBW) has chosen local Los Angeles outdoor advertising company, Billboard Boats Inc. (BBI), to design and supply a floating billboard structure to reach boaters in their environment.

The floating billboard message “Let’s Be Clear” sponsored by the State of California will be placed on the Marina del Rey waters and towed by a boat during select summer weekends. The program focuses on increasing the availability and use of pumpout facilities and dump stations to eliminate sewage discharge into our waters and encourage environmentally sound practices.

Where boaters choose

to dump sewage from a boat is critical. Recreational and commercial boaters commonly dump untreated sewage offshore even though most marinas have facilities available for boat owners to dump their septic tanks. The closer the discharge point is to shore, the closer it is to where people are swimming and gathering shellfish as well as proximity to marine farms and important ecological areas. In these areas boat sewage poses potential environmental and public health issues. Untreated sewage has also been identified to influence tides, wave action, currents, salinity and temperature of the water. Therefore it is important boaters are made aware of the dangers.

Marina del Rey ranks as one of the largest man-made private boat harbors in the United States. The campaign will run during select summer weekends including the Labor Day holiday. More information about California Department of Boating initiatives can be found at their Boat Responsibly website.

The floating billboard design has been patented by BBI. The structures have been successfully introduced in numerous national markets however this event marks the first appearance of the medium in Marina del Rey. bbi products provide an environmental advertising solution. Each on water advertising campaign contributes to keeping the ocean clean. The inflatable billboards are retrofitted with a small netting device to collect all surface debris and trash. For land display, the products are temporary and do not require alterations to the land or structural modifications. Additionally, both the inflatable billboards and banners are reusable for future campaigns.
