2014-04-15 01:02:03 - Keene, NH – In celebration of National Volunteer Week in April, teammates at C&S Wholesale Grocers facilities across the country participated in volunteer projects, from assisting at Food Banks to landscaping at a youth ball field. On Friday, April 11th at the company’s headquarters in Keene, NH, employees engaged in an all-day project, sorting and packing 23,400 books for kids. Supplied by First Book, the new books will be given to 31 area schools and non-profit organizations.
A discouraging 57% of New Hampshire fourth graders score at reading levels that are “below proficient.” 75% of those are from low-income families. (Annie E. Casey Foundation, Kids Count Data Center). Key to improving reading skills is access to books. First Book references studies confirming that the number of books in the home directly predicts reading achievement. Children who grew up with books in their homes reached a higher level of education than those who did not.
“While the statistics about kids’ reading scores and access to books are sobering,” said Gina Goff, Senior Director of Community Involvement at C&S, “knowing that books can open a world of knowledge, ideas and imagination is inspiring. Because the books arrived on a
truck, we called this initiative ‘Books on Wheels’ – and it will make a difference.”
Thirty-one Title I eligible schools and non-profit organizations from the Monadnock Region and Brattleboro will distribute the new, age-appropriate books to more than 5,000 children to take home. C&S worked in partnership with First Book on this National Volunteer Day project.
