OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/04/12 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today released statistics :
www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/agency-agence/stats/menu-eng.html for the second quarter of the 2012/2013 fiscal year. These numbers, covering the period of July through September 2012, demonstrate the hard work done by our officers to uphold the CBSA's mandate and core values.
Nearly 31 million travellers crossed Canada's borders this summer in more than 10 million vehicles, and nearly 100,000 aircraft. The country's waterways were also busy this summer as the CBSA processed more than 70,000 vessels.
Enforcement highlights for the quarter include:
-- More than $32 million in cocaine has been seized by the CBSA's officers
successfully keeping a significant quantity of this dangerous drug out
of the hands of vulnerable Canadians. Cocaine continues to be one of the
most prevalently seized illegal drugs by our officers.
-- BSOs kept dangerous firearms from entering Canada, seizing over 150
guns.
-- CBSA officers removed more than 5,100 inadmissible persons from Canada,
including 361 who were inadmissible for criminality, serious
criminality, national security reasons or participation in war crimes
and crimes against humanity. In addition, over 9,700 individuals were
denied entry to Canada.
These successes are a point of pride for the Agency and serve to demonstrate the commitment, dedication, expertise and professionalism of our officers as they carry out the CBSA's mandate on a daily basis. They represent the best of the CBSA in its efforts to protect the safety and prosperity of Canada.
