KANSAS CITY, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/17/13 -- For the second consecutive year, Burns & McDonnell has been named as one of America's "100 Best Companies to Work For" by FORTUNE magazine. Burns & McDonnell ranked 18 on the publication's 16th annual list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," up from number 26 on the 2012 ranking. Burns & McDonnell also made the list at number 50 in 2009. The highly regarded ranking includes some of the most well-known companies in Corporate America. Burns & McDonnell was the only Kansas City-based company to make the list in 2012 and 2013.

According to the magazine, key factors for companies making this year's list were commitments to employee wellness, community outreach, professional and leadership development and commitments to diversity.

To pick the "100 Best Companies to Work For," FORTUNE works with the Great Place to Work Institute -- a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries -- to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. More than 277,000 employees from 259 companies responded to the survey created by the Institute. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions about employees' attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The remaining third is based on a company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit questionnaire, which asks detailed questions about pay and benefits, and open-ended questions on hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.
Over the past six years, despite a severe economic recession, Burns & McDonnell has added more than 1,000 positions to its nationwide workforce. At year-end 2012, the nationwide employee count totaled 3,668, including nearly 2,200 employee owners located in Kansas City. The company expects to grow to more than 4,000 employee owners sometime around mid-year 2013.
A 100 percent employee-owned company, Burns & McDonnell is marking its 27th year of employee ownership in 2013. The engineering, architecture and construction firm recently concluded a $25 million expansion and renovation of its world headquarters campus in south Kansas City that included a large new health clinic, fitness center, cafeteria, 450-seat auditorium and numerous other quality of life features.
