SAO PAULO (AP) - Brazilian media Sunday described the national team's 4-0 win over Uruguay as a historic, taboo-smashing victory.
The success on Saturday was Brazil's first in 33 years in a World Cup qualifying match in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.
«Brazilian Squad Shatters 33-year-old Taboo,» a headline in the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper read.
«Brazil ends Taboo, Easily,» the Estado de S.Paulo newspaper agreed.
«It was the most important victory in this quest to qualify for the World Cup,» said veteran sports commentator Galvao Bueno of the Globo TV. network. «After all, it's been 33 years.
For Sao Paulo's UOL Web site, Brazil's win was history-making.
«The Brazilian team made history on Saturday at the Centenario Stadium,» UOL said. «It was a gala performance.
But UOL also cautioned against excessive elation.
«The team must now be careful to not get carried away and think its unbeatable,» it added. «It's like what (midfielder) Felipe Melo said: 'The victory over Uruguay was an important step, but we must keep in mind that we have yet to conquer our objective.
«With one year to go before the World Cup in South Africa, Brazil has demonstrated an important quality - competitiveness,» the Web site of sports magazine Placar said. «It took an important step to ensure its presence in the next World Cup.
Brazil is the only country to have played in every World Cup, and the victory in the South American qualifier puts it closer to extending that record.
