Volcan Compañía Minera S.A.A. informed that Hydroelectric Power Station, Baños
V, located in Huaral, Lima, has been successfully registered to issue and trade
carbon bonds under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.
"We are pleased to announce that our run-of-river Hydro electrical Power Plant,
Baños V, with a 9,2 MW of capacity, has received registry confirmation from the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)" said José Estela
Ramirez, Volcan's Energy Manager.
Baños V is the Company's second hydro electrical project to start operations in
the last 3 years. This central generates enough energy to cope with 50% of
Chungar's (a Volcan Group's Company) electricity requirements, thereby Chungar
becomes a Mine which is supplied
with 100% renewable energy. The energy
produced by Baños V is equivalent to the electrical supply for more than 20,000
Peruvian homes, and, because it is clean and renewable energy, the amount of CO2
not emitted is also equivalent to remove 7,000 cars from circulation.
Volcan's Energy Manager, Mr José Estela, remarked that this certification "shows
that mining companies are friendly with the environment and projects like Baños
V are internationally catalogued as renewable energy, that means that they
inject clean energy and renewable to Peru, contributing to reduce the emissions
of greenhouse gases, from the energy matrix of our country, at a time when there
is a growing demand for energy. The certification of Baños V will allow the
issuing of about 35k carbon bonds per year, which could be traded in foreign
markets".
Volcan Group has 41 MW in Hydro electrical Power Plants in operation and has
other immediate hydro electrical projects for about 60MW, which shows the strong
Company's commitment with the generation of renewable energy.
