Denise Donovan, the Founder and Director of the International Bed Bug Resource Authority (IBBRA) with her team of world renowned expert entomologists and pest management companies have been working towards massive bed bug public awareness for the past five years.
In 2010, Denise went on KCAL-LA with the message of her Be-aware, Not Scare program targeted towards the general public. Posted on the IBBRA’s web site and written in each of the eleven bed bug books, Denise states "In the next decade, every household and business will have experienced bed bugs to some degree. Isn't it about time that you found out why and what steps you can take to prevent it?"
With over 30,000 copies of her “Bed Bugs Gone Completely
Wild” book in circulation, she went on to target each area that impacts the general public by writing ten other informative books including; Travel, Detection Dogs, Landlord - Tenants and Property Management, Hospitality Risk, Bed Bug Basics, Health Implications, Home Owner Do-it-yourself, Professional Bed Bug Treatment Methods and her recent “Think like a Bed Bug” in both English and Spanish. All these books are available on Amazon and Kindle and companies can obtain volume discounts to hand out to their employees, management, staff, church groups or neighborhoods. www.amazon.com/author/denisedonovan
She and her team are in the trenches daily and are dedicated to bringing this awareness to the forefront. “We lived without bed bugs for several decades and because of the lack of knowledge of the pest, more and more people go months without understanding that they have them. Bed bugs are a serious challenge for everyone. Once they have taken hold in a dwelling they are one of the most difficult pests to eliminate. They are spreading faster than we can get information out there” says Denise.
Aside from writing awareness books, Denise answers a 24 hour Bed Bug Hotline where people who have made a recent bed bug discovery call in to reach a knowledgeable, compassionate voice that educates them while evaluating their situation and finds them expert professional help when needed.
If the IBBRA doesn’t have a member in the area which a call comes from, Denise starts interviewing pest management companies to find those who are not only highly experienced; but exemplary in bed bug education and elimination to add to the team.
“We need to up our game and have better informed consumers! says Denise. By the time people call me in tears, they have already soaked their homes with Internet or local hardware store products which are a “temporary ban-aid” and by then the infestation has seriously grown. We need to get to these people before they get bed bugs and if they do; educate them so they know the signs and what to do”.
Bed bugs are not just a national challenge, they are a global challenge. Aside from their US professionals who can be found on their web site Service Provider Map, the IBBRA has extensions in their educational outreach program in Spain, Italy and the UK.
