Sailors in the southern greek aegean sea look for latest informations about local nautical installations and security improvements The greek islands improve their nautical infrastructure.
Latest construction is located on the southern cycladic island Astipalaiia (36°32,8N,026°21,4E) in the small bay of the main village called Skala.
A wavebreaker of 75m legths was built, and sheltered by that a mooring-quai for yachts. Water ans electricity will be supplied. In July the construction was 60% ready, and already used without charges, what
will surely change after the little port of Skala will be finished. As indicated at the construction site, the European Union supported the construction with 3.050.000 Euros.
Astipalaiia belongs to the regional district of the dodecanese islands with itīs administrative capital Kalymnos.
Sailors reach it coming from the islands of Amorgos, Levitha in the north or coming from the turkish coast via Rhodes, Chalki, Tilos and Kos.
The character of Astipalaiia is itīs cycladic style houses in white cubes, and the old italian fortress on top of the about 250m high village hill. As Astipalaiia is in the center of the Meltemi area, sailors prefer to stay for a few days and wait for better weather conditions. Alternative mooring areas are the bay of Maltezana about 3 nm east or the bay of Vathy with the very secure deep bay having a state as a "port".
