2013-12-05 17:30:14 - A dancer trying to live her dream
Last month I went to a show of the famous Belgian music band Milk Inc. It is one of Belgium’s bestselling export products: commercial dance music. Even if you are not a hard-core dance music addict, you will still enjoy these concerts because the atmosphere is great and everybody dances like crazy. The show was spectacular and the lead singer Linda Mertens was dancing and singing the night away, but I personally was most impressed by her background dancers. One in particular caught my eye.
After the show I was able to go back stage and have a chat with her. Laurien Decibel- that’s the girl’s name- told me about her passion for dance and immediately I knew why she
was the one who captured all of my attention. Not only is she good looking, what is most different about her is that she is a dancer who dances from the heart and with all her passion. She told me about her dancing career which is quite impressive. She has been dancing as the main character in video clips from Milk Inc to Hadise, working with top-notch choreographers like Ish Ait Hamou and Bruce Blanchard and performing in live shows like the MTV Music Awards in Amsterdam. After looking into her portfolio I discovered that she is not only a great performer, she is also a very creative choreographer herself. Her style is hard to describe as she tries to adapt to the moment and to the person she is creating for but she will never lose her own signature which I would describe as ‘sexy with an edge’. Her very contemporary and innovating way of combining hip-hop with a more jazzy commercial touch is a pleasure for the eye. Yet even though she loves to make choreographies and to perform in video clips, her heart lies with live performances. She loves to live in the moment, feeling the atmosphere of the audience.
After chatting for a bit, she told me about her big dream: moving away to see more of the world. She explained me that she will always consider Belgium as her home but that dancing is about unexpected encounters, about new experiences, about taking a risk. All of these feelings can be transformed once again in a great performance. She’ll soon be moving away to the centre of contemporary dance, Los Angeles, to explore how far she can make it. LA is a great environment to get inspired, to take risks, to meet people and hopefully learn how to transform her passion to a full time job.
It is not the easiest dream to have, but with the right attitude and state of mind I think this Belgian girl from a small town has everything it takes to make her dream come true. I am pretty sure that a lot of showcase critics will write exactly what I am writing about her today. So artists all over the world: beware because your background dancer Laurien Decibel might just capture all the attention with her groovy dance moves.
