- Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) recently honored ARAMARK Business Dining with its Pollution Prevention Award for its commitment to sustainable practices. The recognition was given to ARAMARK for spearheading the transformation of the onsite restaurants, coffee kiosks, catering operations and mobile vending programs on the 36-square mile campus in Northern New Mexico.

From providing incentives that reward employees

who choose to use to use china instead of disposable dishes, to eliminating all non-recyclable or biodegradable food and beverage containers, to developing a composting program, ARAMARK has implemented a series of environmentally sensitive alternatives within LANL's workplace.

"ARAMARK has taken a leadership role in promoting green practices at the Laboratory," said Patricia Gallagher, environmental management system team leader for LANL. "This is especially important to us since Otowi, (the main onsite restaurant) is a very central and visible place at the Laboratory."

ARAMARK continues to sponsor educational and awareness activities that help educate the more than 9,000 LANL employees on simple, practical alternatives to consider whether on- or off-campus.

"A complete environmentally beneficial makeover can only occur when you have the full support of the client," said Vance Boone, ARAMARK's Foodservice Director at the site. "We truly appreciate how receptive LANL has been to our initiatives and how its support has made a difference in preserving our earth's natural resources."

Through its Pollution Prevention Program, LANL provides engineering and technical support to promote source reduction of waste and pollutants to lower operating and disposal costs, enhance safety of operations, and assure that mission work can be accomplished without waste or regulatory-related delays. The program also promotes environmentally preferable purchasing, sustainable design, lifecycle chemical management, recycling, and fuel, energy, and water conservation.
