2008-10-15 15:24:54 - Every port in the UK will be getting their own automatic number plate recognition camera (ANPR) system; this will be used to combat foreign drivers who do not pay road tax because their cars are unregistered.

All ports to get automatic number plate recognition cameras

Any foreigner who comes over to the UK to work or live has to register their vehicle with the DVLA within six months, otherwise they are driving illegally, by setting up the system at the ports the authorities can get a date of when that particular number plate was registered as coming into the country.

If at some later date the vehicle is picked up by another ANPR system, then the database will have a record of when the vehicle entered the country and will then alert the teams to either clamp the vehicle or tow it away to the car pound.

The DVLA director of enforcement, Dave Hancock, says, "We're not trying to

target tourists. We're not trying to target business people in the country on legitimate business.

"We want to make sure if there is a road traffic collision we are able to trace that person and take action."

If a vehicle is not registered and is involved in an accident or caught by a speed camera there is little that the authorities can do about it, until now that is.

All data will be stored at the DVLA, making them the hub for all agencies to trace vehicles and their owners, while those foreign registered vehicles that have been seen coming into the country and not leaving will be traced and the owners fined or the vehicle seized.
