After Crash Landing Boeing Split In Three

Print article Print article

2010-08-23 07:03:58 - The fuselage of a Boeing 737 split into three after crash landing and skidding along the runway.

While attempting to land on an island in the Caribbean, a Colombian passenger plane crashed. It was reportedly hit by lightning only minutes before.
The fuselage broke into three pieces as it skidded down the runway. The Boeing 737 was carrying 131 passengers and 6 crew members.

According to Dr Robert Sanchez, director of Hospital Amor de Patria, “Some of the patients are in critical condition.” Only 1 death was reported, while 119 people were injured. Of 99 passengers taken to the Amor de Patria Hospital on San Andres, only four suffered major injuries.

Sanchez told CNN en Español an eleven year-old girl suffered severe head and face trauma. The girl had been trapped under some of the seating.
Doctors also

were experiencing difficulty controlling internal bleeding in a man with pelvic injuries.

The national police said Amar Fernandex de Barreto, 65, is reported to have died of a heart attack, on the way to the hospital. Six people, including an 18-month-old boy, were not injured.

The incident was described as a ‘miracle’ that so many survived, by San Andres Governor Pedro Gallardo.

Off-duty officers assisted in the rescue of crash survivors, who were scattered across the darkened runway. The group of police officers had been waiting at the airport for that same plane to return them back to the Colombian mainland.

Flight 8250 arrived in the middle of an electrical storm. It had been en route to the island from the Columbian capital of Bogota. David Barrero, a Colombian Air Force Col., said officials were investigating reports that the Aires plane had been struck by lightning just prior to the crash.

CNN World Weather confirmed there had been multiple lightning strikes around the San Andres airport at the time of the crash. Analysis of data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network indicates there were 11 strikes within 10 kilometers of the runway in a five-minute span.
