GURNEE, Ill., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. government Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released their annual national report of Assisted Reproductive Technology IVF success statistics. Once again the Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago was among the leading U.S. clinics reporting successful IVF treatment. The data for this national report come from the 411 fertility clinics in operation in 2004 that provided and verified data on the outcomes of all IVF cycles started in their clinics (the CDC did not post the 2004 results publicly until February, 2007).
"We've
always been pleased to report our IVF success rates to the CDC because for the past 8 consecutive years, our In Vitro Fertilization success rates have exceeded the national averages. In 2004, our IVF success rate per egg retrieval procedure for women under 35 years of age reached 66 percent, as compared to the national average of 40.2%," according to Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago's Richard Sherbahn, MD, a board certified reproductive endocrinology and infertility physician. "I believe that it is important to maintain high IVF success rates, while at the same time minimizing the risks for having a risky triplet pregnancy."
Dr. Sherbahn's center has a strict policy limiting the maximum number of embryos transferred to the uterus to 1 or 2 in selected couples, and then selecting the best quality embryos for transfer, in order to get the highest chance for success. His IVF statistics bear this out, showing high overall success rates and a very low rate of triplet pregnancies. "The recently released 2004 CDC report cites our triplet rate at less than 1% of pregnancies," adds Dr. Sherbahn.
Dr. Sherbahn proposes that the best way for a couple needing advanced fertility treatments to increase their chances for success with IVF is by having the procedures done at a high quality program that follows strict guidelines regarding the maximum number of embryos to transfer. This should be based on the female age and other factors. He attributes their high success rates to a state-of-the-art In Vitro Fertilization lab, highly skilled personnel, and constant maintenance of quality control throughout the entire system.
Dr. Sherbahn completed his reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He has been involved in research and patient care in reproductive medicine for more than 14 years, and is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
